Dear Parents and Carers,

What a busy and memorable week it has been - and the rising heat has certainly added an extra layer of challenge for pupils and staff alike.  We began the week with a real celebration of creativity as our Year 5/6 pupils performed their end‑of‑year production, ‘Let the Games Begin’.  The play brought a wonderful sense of nostalgia, with children stepping into the worlds of classic board games such as Cluedo and Monopoly, delivering each scene with imagination, humour and confidence.  Every child rose to the occasion, showcasing teamwork, commitment and a genuine joy in performing.

The week continued with our Summer Fair, which provided a fantastic opportunity for families to come together and enjoy an afternoon of community spirit.  My heartfelt thanks go to every single person who helped the event run so smoothly - your time, energy and goodwill made all the difference.  All monies raised will go directly towards supporting children in school, and we are deeply grateful for your generosity.

We also managed to fit in KS1 Sports Day before the heat became unbearable, and it was a truly joyous event. The children gave their all, showing determination, enthusiasm and plenty of smiles. Well done to every pupil who took part. The winning house was Southwell.

Behind the scenes, we have been working closely with the central team at the Mitre Trust as we begin to incorporate some of their systems.  Mrs Marshall and I had the opportunity to attend their Leadership Day, where we engaged in thoughtful discussions around the Government’s White Paper and wider educational topics in preparation for the year ahead.

Finally, after careful consideration, we have made the decision to change catering providers.  We are currently in the process of moving to the new company, and further information will be shared in due course.  One of the key factors in this decision was the price point: meals were due to rise to £3.40 with the existing provider, whereas the proposed new supplier has recently set their price at £2.95.  We hope this will support families whilst maintaining quality and choice for pupils.

As we look ahead, please keep an eye on the diary as we begin to collate and publish key dates for the next academic year, ensuring families have plenty of notice for smooth planning.

News from the Classes

Reception

This week, Class Reception showed fantastic teamwork, resilience and perseverance as they took part in their very first Sports Day. The children demonstrated great determination and enthusiasm as they competed in a range of activities and cheered on their friends.  The class has also been learning about how to look after our world, with a focus on recycling and the importance of not dropping litter. After reading and discussing stories about caring for the environment, the children shared some wonderful ideas about how they recycle at home and why it is important to protect our planet. In Maths, the children have been developing their understanding of addition and have been learning how to make number sentences to represent their calculations. They have enjoyed using practical equipment and pictures to help solve addition problems.

Class One

This week, Class 1 have been busy developing their own setting descriptions inspired by the story ‘The Night Pirates’.  They worked hard to imagine what the different places in the story looked like and used expanded noun phrases to make their writing more detailed and exciting.  With the help of a picture thesaurus, the children explored new vocabulary and carefully chose words to bring their settings to life. They created wonderful descriptions using phrases such as “peach, soft sand” and “old, rusty ship”, helping their readers to picture the scene clearly.  The children enjoyed sharing their ideas with one another, working together to improve their sentences and encouraging their classmates to use interesting and ambitious words in their writing.

Class 1 also took part in Sports Day this week, and they were absolutely fantastic.  They showed great enthusiasm and determination as they worked together in their house teams to complete a range of collaborative games.  During the races, every child gave their very best effort from start to finish.  They supported and encouraged one another throughout the day, celebrating each other’s successes and showing kindness.  They demonstrated excellent teamwork, positive attitudes and outstanding sportsmanship.

Class Two

This week, Class 2 have had another exciting week of learning across the curriculum. In English, we began exploring the wonderful story The Koala Who Could.  The children thought carefully about how Kevin the koala might have been feeling at different points in the story, identifying the highs and lows of his emotional journey and using evidence from the text to explain their ideas.  In Maths, we continued our work on time, focusing on reading and recognising o'clock and half past times, as well as exploring times past the hour.  The children have been practising these skills through a range of practical activities and are becoming much more confident.

Our DT immersive day was a fantastic success!  The children enjoyed tasting and rating a variety of pizza toppings, learning safe chopping techniques and then using their new skills to assemble their own delicious pizzas to take home.  They showed excellent enthusiasm, teamwork and independence throughout the day. In Gymnastics, we developed our movement skills by practising teddy bear rolls and improving our balance by holding a range of one-foot balances and bends.  We also continued our Geography learning by exploring the different states and territories of Australia in greater detail, discussing why different places might appeal to different people based on factors such as climate, jobs, landscapes and lifestyle.

Class Three

This week, Class 3 have continued to demonstrate excellent enthusiasm and creativity across the curriculum.  In English, the children have been developing their narrative writing by creating detailed character and setting descriptions. They have focused on selecting ambitious vocabulary and using descriptive language to paint vivid pictures for the reader, bringing their characters and settings to life.  In Maths, Class 3 have been learning about vertical and horizontal lines, as well as identifying and describing parallel and perpendicular lines.  The children have explored these concepts through practical activities and applied their understanding to a range of problem-solving tasks.

In Geography, the class have been investigating how Pompeii has changed over time. They have compared the ancient city before the eruption of Mount Vesuvius with modern-day Pompeii, exploring how the area has developed and why it remains an important historical and tourist site today.  In French, the children have been learning how to express their likes and dislikes when talking about fruit.  They have practised asking and answering simple questions, using key vocabulary and sentence structures with increasing confidence and enthusiasm.

Class Four

It has been another busy week in Class 4!   The children have had lots of fun writing instructions for anyone brave enough to attend a Tudor banquet.   They have thought carefully about the features of instructional writing and the purpose of each feature, developing their understanding of how writers make their instructions clear and easy to follow.   Class 4 have been learning how to use fronted adverbials to aid cohesion, precise imperative verb phrases to give clear and detailed commands, and a variety of sentence types to make their writing more interesting and engaging for the reader. The children have worked incredibly hard to apply their growing grammatical knowledge and have produced some fantastic pieces of writing.

Class Five

Another busy week has flown by in Class 5, and what a fantastic week it has been!  In Maths, the children have been focusing on converting units of measure.  They have worked hard to apply their understanding of length, mass and capacity, showing increasing confidence when solving a range of practical and reasoning problems.  It has been wonderful to see their resilience and determination as they tackled some tricky challenges.

Our Young Leaders’ session planned the activities for our upcoming visits to Wednesday Welcome, where we will be spending time with members of the local care home through our partnership with the church.  The children showed great enthusiasm, creativity and thoughtfulness as they discussed ways to make the sessions enjoyable and engaging for everyone involved.  We are all looking forward to getting started.

Excitement has also been building as interviews took place for the Class 6 roles and responsibilities.  We were incredibly impressed by the confidence, maturity and ambition shown by all of the applicants. A huge well done to everyone who put themselves forward - watch this space for the results!

To round off the week, we had a fantastic time at the school fair.  It was wonderful to see so many families enjoying the afternoon together and supporting our school community.  One of the highlights for many of us was taking turns in the stocks, which proved to be surprisingly refreshing given the warm weather!  There were plenty of smiles, laughter and memorable moments throughout the event.

Class Six

Class 6 have had another busy and exciting week.  A highlight of the week was performing the Class 5/6 production to parents.  The children put on a fantastic show, demonstrating confidence, teamwork and dedication, and they should be extremely proud of their performances.  The class have also been preparing and running activities for the summer fair, taking on their responsibilities with enthusiasm and helping to make the event enjoyable for everyone involved.  In addition, the children have been completing interviews for the Class 6 job roles, helping to select the next group of pupils who will take on these important responsibilities within the school. Looking ahead to the final weeks of term, Class 6 have also begun preparations for the Leavers’ Service.  It has been wonderful to see the children reflecting on their time at St Anne’s and helping to make this special occasion meaningful and memorable for all.
