Dear Parents and Carers,

What an extraordinary week it has been — certainly one of the hottest we can remember.  Despite the heat, the children have shown remarkable resilience, adapting brilliantly as we worked to ensure every class had access to the coolest parts of school throughout the day.  Even so, I suspect many of us were secretly wishing for an on‑site swimming pool by Wednesday afternoon!

Two classes were due to take part in the Islam Workshop as part of their RE curriculum. Unfortunately, the provider was unwell, and the session had to be cancelled.  We are already working to rearrange this valuable learning experience before the end of term.

On Monday, Alex from DCP Drumming - along with 20 of our talented school drummers - treated us to a fantastic performance showcasing their learning over the year.  The enthusiasm from our school community made it a truly joyful event.

    

Tuesday brought the first part of our KS2 Sports Day, with the track races taking place in the morning.  The children gave it their all, and the points have been safely stored away until the remainder of the event can take place once the weather settles.  Thank you to all parents for your understanding, in relation to the adaptations that were necessary.

Wednesday was another highlight.  As part of our 100th birthday celebrations, children worked in partnership with Outwood Portland’s art department and our Governor, Mrs Mather, to create beautiful clay flowers.  These will soon be painted, varnished, and placed around the school grounds to enhance our natural spaces - including a new spiritual and reflective area we are developing.

Our Year 6 pupils were due to travel to London for their annual visit to the Houses of Parliament.  However, due to the extreme weather, the trip was cancelled at short notice.  With just 48 hours to rethink the plan, staff worked swiftly to create a new adventure - this time heading north to Robin Hood’s Bay and Whitby.  The children had a wonderful day, and we are proud of how adaptable they were.

This week has reminded me once again, how exceptional our staff team is.  Faced with multiple challenges, everyone pulled together to ensure the children still experienced a rich and memorable week.  We were determined not to let it become a week of cancellations, and I am grateful for the creativity and commitment shown by every member of staff.

Looking Ahead

On Wednesday 1^st July, we officially join Mitre Multi Academy Trust.  For parents and children, the day will feel very much like any other.  Over time, we will begin to adopt some of their systems, but this will be a gradual process, always with the best interests of our children and staff at the centre.  A new chapter begins as we ‘turn the page’ in the school’s history.

This week we also said farewell to Rev Edith, who has served on our Governing Body during her time at St Anne’s Church.  We are deeply grateful for her contribution to the spiritual life of our school and wish her every success as she moves to her new parish.

As we begin planning for the year ahead, we welcome your thoughts.  If there is something you would like to see in the coming year, please do get in touch.  Your voice matters, and we value the partnership we share in educating every child in our care.  I anticipate the year ahead will once again be filled with memorable experiences that complement the curriculum.  Above all, that they give opportunity for children in our care, ‘to develop spiritually, mentally and physically within a caring, Christian environment’.  We will share the dates in the coming weeks!

News from the Classes

Reception

Class Reception have been brilliant this week, taking the hot weather and changes to their routine in their stride.  The children thoroughly enjoyed another transition morning with Miss Decouto, where they began to build relationships with her and learned a little more about what to expect in Class 1.  In class, the children have been exploring the story ‘Handa’s Surprise’. They enjoyed comparing life in England and Kenya, discussing what is similar and what is different, and sharing their own ideas and observations.  The week also included a creative clay session, where the children learned how to use the pinch pot method to make their own flowers. 

Class One

This week in Science, Class 1 have been learning all about how to stay safe in the sun.  They had some fantastic discussions and were able to share lots of great ideas about looking after themselves during hot weather.  The children talked about the importance of drinking plenty of water, sitting in the shade when the sun is strong, and wearing sun cream to protect their skin. Using what they had learned, the children created bright and informative posters to help others stay safe in the sun.  They carefully included useful tips and colourful illustrations to share their important safety messages.  Class 1 were very enthusiastic and showed a great understanding of how to enjoy sunny weather while keeping themselves healthy and safe.

Class Two

In Class 2, the children have been completing poster presentations, working collaboratively with their partners to create posters on an Australian state or territory.  On Wednesday, the children took part in a clay workshop where they created clay flowers.  In English, the children have been looking at commas in a list and proper nouns.  They have explored fractions in maths and focused on recognising and finding equivalent fractions as well as three quarters.  It has been a hot one for the children this week, so they have had plenty of brain breaks and hydration breaks and they have explored how to keep safe in the sun and safe around water.  In our computing lessons the children have continued to explore ScratchJr programming quizzes.

Class Three

Despite the hot weather this week, Class 3 have continued to work hard and have shown excellent resilience and focus in their learning.  In Science, the children have been investigating how shadows are formed.  Using the Sun as a light source, they explored the relationship between light, objects and shadows, observing how shadows change depending on the position of the light source.  The children also demonstrated their scientific skills by producing accurate scientific drawings to record their observations.  In Maths, Class 3 have been revisiting and consolidating the formal methods for addition, subtraction, multiplication and division. This has provided an opportunity to strengthen their fluency and confidence before beginning their new unit on shape.  In English, the class have started their narrative writing unit.  They have been exploring collective nouns and developing their use of ambitious vocabulary to make their writing more descriptive and engaging.  The children have enjoyed generating creative ideas and experimenting with language in preparation for writing their own stories.  In Geography, the children have been comparing the human geographical features of different European countries with those found in the United Kingdom.  They have discussed similarities and differences between population, work sector, language and religion, developing a deeper understanding of how people live and work across Europe.

Class Four

This week, the children proudly completed their painting unit by creating their own Monet-inspired masterpiece. After choosing one of three paintings by Claude Monet as their inspiration, they drew upon all the knowledge and skills they have developed throughout the unit.

They carefully mixed tertiary colours and experimented with tint, tone and shade to achieve the desired effects, while also applying their understanding of foreground, middle ground and background to create a convincing sense of depth within their compositions. The finished pieces beautifully showcased not only the children's growing technical skills but also their creativity and attention to detail. It has been wonderful to see their confidence as young artists flourish, and they should all be incredibly proud of their final paintings.

  

Class Five

Class 5 has enjoyed another busy and productive week of learning.  In Maths, we have been working with negative numbers and developing problem-solving skills by applying them to real-life contexts.  The children explored scenarios involving bank overdrafts and temperature changes, demonstrating excellent reasoning and mathematical thinking.  In English, they have completed a shared write of a newspaper report, based on our class text, ‘Who Let the Gods Out?’  Our clay workshop was a particular highlight of the week. The children thoroughly enjoyed learning where clay comes from and exploring different techniques used by artists.  They created beautiful clay flowers, carefully using methods such as cross-hatching to join pieces securely together.  Their creativity and concentration were fantastic to see.  Sports Day was a wonderful success, and we were incredibly proud of the teamwork, determination and sportsmanship shown by all members of Class 5.  The children supported one another throughout the events and celebrated each other's achievements with enthusiasm and respect.  We also spent time reviewing how to stay safe online and discussing why this is so important.  The children reflected thoughtfully on how to use technology responsibly and how to recognise situations where they may need support or advice. Well done, Class 5, for another excellent week of learning and achievement!

Class Six

Class 6 have had another fantastic and memorable week!  In our topic work, the children have been exploring how democracy works, learning about the roles of the Houses of Parliament and the House of Lords, and developing a deeper understanding of how our country is governed.  There has also been lots of performance practice as we continue preparing for the school production, with pupils showing great enthusiasm and growing confidence on stage.  In art, the class have been wonderfully creative using clay as part of the whole-school project, producing some impressive and thoughtful pieces.  A definite highlight of the week was our trip to the East Coast on Thursday. Visiting Robin Hood’s Bay and Whitby was a truly memorable experience, and the children represented the school brilliantly throughout.
