Summer 33: Friday 19 June 2026
Friday 19th June 2026
Dear Parents/Carers,
As we come to the end of a busy and uplifting week, I want to share some of the wonderful learning experiences taking place across school.
This week has been our Sports Week, and pupils have embraced every opportunity with enthusiasm. Working within classes, they have been developing and practising the skills they will need for Sports Day next week. Alongside this, they have enjoyed being introduced to new and exciting ways of keeping active, including pickleball and skateboarding. These activities have certainly sparked interest and confidence across year groups.
My thanks go to Miss Burgoyne for organising these opportunities and for her continued commitment to ensuring sport remains a vibrant and inclusive part of school life. Sport is a key aspect of the primary experience, and over the years we have used the Sports Premium funding to provide a wide range of opportunities, resources and coaching to enhance provision for all children. As you may be aware, the Government is ending this stream of funding, and we now await further detail on how the new suggested approach will be rolled out. We will share more information as soon as it becomes available.
Within the classroom, all children who were required to participate in the National Phonics Screening have now completed their checks. Staff are compiling assessment information which will contribute to your child’s annual report. Well done to all children who have participated in the 'formal statutory tests' over the last few weeks.
Over time we have seen an increase in the number of families seeking advice on matters linked to family life rather than learning support alone. We wanted to ensure our whole school community is aware of the Manton Family Hub, which uses a whole‑family approach to provide access to integrated support across health, social care, voluntary organisations and education settings. When fully integrated, family hubs can include support such as:
- Information, advice and guidance - covering a wide range of family needs
- Antenatal and postnatal care - support for new and expectant parents
- Support groups for new parents - opportunities to connect and share experiences
- One‑to‑one support - personalised guidance for families
- Evidence‑based parenting programmes - practical strategies for home life
- Health interventions - including healthy lifestyles, contraception and substance use
- Money management - budgeting and financial advice
- Healthy relationship programmes - support for positive family dynamics
- Youth training and employment - guidance for older children and young adults
- Volunteering opportunities - ways to get involved locally
- Peer support - connecting with others in similar situations
- Youth services and activities - safe, structured opportunities for young people
- SEND services for 0–25-year-olds - specialist support for families
- Housing advice and support - guidance on accommodation issues
- Welfare rights - help navigating benefits and entitlements
- Reducing parental conflict interventions - support for managing challenges at home
If you search “Manton Family Hub” online, you will find all the ways to contact the service.
I also need to raise a concern regarding the Church Car Park. We do not like to moan, but it is necessary this week. As previously shared, the car park belongs to the Church, and it is the Church Committee’s decision to allow school parents to use it to support drop‑off and pick‑up. However, the speed, lack of care, and inappropriate parking we have witnessed over recent weeks is putting our children at risk. Children also need to be watched closely when adults are talking to each other, this week, we had a child run into the path of a car. We do not want an accident, so let’s all work together.
Following our school values, we ask that everyone 'respects' this facility and ensure that as a school community we keep our children at the 'heart' of all actions. We do not want to lose this facility, especially as parking around the school site is already challenging. Please ensure you follow the expectations and drive with care.
On another parking matter, Nottinghamshire County Council are currently consulting on changes to Devonshire Street – double yellow lines and bus stop. The deadline for comments is 17th July 2026. You can view the changes on the County Council’s website: https://consult.nottinghamshire.gov.uk The consultation document is attached to the newsletter email.
Sports Day Arrangements
Looking ahead to Sports Day, please note the following arrangements:
- KS2 - 9:30 am (lasting approximately 2 hours)
- KS1 - 1:30 pm (lasting until the end of the school day)
The Church gate will open ten minutes before each event and will be locked once everyone is inside for security, so please arrive on time. The FOSAS group will be selling refreshments for adults.
With warm weather forecast for Tuesday, please ensure children come prepared with sun hats, sun cream, and water bottles.

News from the Classes
Reception
This week, Reception class have been continuing their work on minibeasts, learning about frogs and bees. The children explored the artwork The Snail, by Henri Matisse and used this as inspiration to create their own colourful snail collages. The children also enjoyed their first transition morning with Miss Decouto. They went on a minibeast hunt around the school grounds, where they found and observed ladybirds, spiders, worms and ants. In maths, they have been focusing on patterns and spotting the repeat before continuing their own.
Class One
This week, Class 1 have been exploring synagogues in their RE lessons, and learning about why they are such important places of worship in Judaism. They were introduced to some of the key features found inside a synagogue, including the Bimah, where the Torah is read, the Ark, where the Torah scrolls are kept safely, and the Ner Tamid, the special light that is always kept shining to show that God is always present. The children showed great curiosity as they talked about what each of these features is used for and why they are important. They then used their new understanding in a creative way by building their own synagogues using Lego.
Class 1 also performed their class assembly to their families and the rest of school. They were fantastic, speaking clearly and performing stories, songs and poems brilliantly. Well done!

Class Two
In Class 2, the children have continued their assessments and have worked extremely hard and they are glad they are over. They have loved Sports week, experiencing the skateboards and the Pickleball, learning new skills and some children have taken a keen interest in a new sport. The children have enjoyed a carousel of activities this week including continuing writing their non chronological reports on Australia, writing a set of instructions How to Train a Dragon and Fluency Bee. In RE, the children have completed their story booklets on Jonah and the Whale, the children have thoroughly enjoyed creating this booklets and have showcased great maturity and perseverance. In Computing, children have programmed quizzes using ScratchJr and working with their computing partners collaboratively. The children have also focused their handwriting this week on common exception words, and ensuring their pre cursive handwriting is the best it can be. In gymnastics with Emma, the children focused on partner work doing the w position, cartwheels, forward rolls, teddy bear rolls and l shape handstands. A great learning week!
Class Three
This week, Class 3 have thoroughly enjoyed taking part in Sports Week, where they experienced exciting scooter and pickleball workshops. These sessions gave the children the opportunity to try new sports, develop their coordination and teamwork skills, and embrace new challenges with enthusiasm and determination. In English, the children have been writing imaginative diary entries based on A Day in Pompeii, putting themselves in the shoes of someone experiencing the eruption of Mount Vesuvius. They have focused on using descriptive language, adverbs and conjunctions to bring their writing to life and convey the thoughts and emotions of their characters. In Maths, Class 3 have continued to develop their understanding of time by exploring the relationships between days, weeks and months. They have also been learning to convert between minutes and seconds, applying their knowledge to solve a range of practical problems. In Science, the class have been learning about the importance of staying safe in the sun. They have explored why the Sun can be dangerous, discussing the harmful effects of ultraviolet (UV) rays and identifying ways to protect themselves, including wearing sunscreen, seeking hade and staying hydrated. In Geography, the children have been comparing the physical and human geography of countries across Europe. They have identified physical features such as mountains, rivers and volcanoes, alongside human features including cities, population and languages. In RE, Class 3 have been learning about the Prophet Muhammad as a key figure in Islam. They have explored why he is an important and inspirational person for Muslims, learning about his teachings, his character and the impact he had on the development of the Islamic faith.

Class Four
In Science this week, the children have continued their learning in the Living Things and Their Habitats unit by exploring vertebrates and the features that make them unique, such as having a backbone. They investigated the different groups of vertebrates identified by scientists and practised classifying animals using classification tables and two-way Carroll diagrams. The children recorded their findings carefully and demonstrated a growing understanding of how living things can be grouped according to their characteristics. Next week, they will build on this knowledge by learning how to use classification keys to identify and sort living things.
Class Five
This week, the children have continued to work hard across the curriculum and have shown great enthusiasm in all areas of their learning. In Maths, we have consolidated our understanding of decimals, revisited key concepts, and applied our knowledge to a range of reasoning and problem-solving activities. We have also begun our new unit on negative numbers, exploring where they can be found in everyday life and learning how to compare and order them. In Science, we have continued our learning about how humans develop from birth to old age. This week, our focus has been on adolescence and early to mid-adulthood. The children explored the physical, emotional and social changes that can occur during these stages of life and engaged thoughtfully in discussions about human development.
In RE, we looked closely at the meaning behind the Lord's Prayer and considered how its words help Christians understand God's Kingdom. The children reflected on key phrases within the prayer and discussed how these teachings can influence the way people live their lives and treat others. Sports Week has been a particular highlight! The children had a fantastic time developing new skills through skateboarding and pickleball sessions. They approached both activities with enthusiasm, determination and excellent sportsmanship, and it was wonderful to see them challenging themselves and enjoying new experiences. Well done to everyone for another excellent week!
Class Six
Class 6 have been building confidence through new experiences, including having the chance to play pickleball and develop their coordination and balance through learning skills on skateboards. In Maths, they have been tackling a variety of challenges, focusing on explaining and justifying their thinking as they demonstrate their reasoning skills. In English, they have been writing short narratives designed to showcase all of the Class 6 writing features, and it has been fantastic to see their creativity and progress. The children have also been busy rehearsing for their play performance, showing great enthusiasm and teamwork, alongside practising for Sports Day with energy and determination. It has been another brilliant and active week in Year 6!

Congratulations to our Stars of the Week this week
