Summer 30: Friday 22 May 2026

Friday 22nd May 2026

Dear Parents/Carers,

Life at St Anne’s seems to fly by — it’s hard to believe we have reached the May half‑term already.  The final half term of the academic year is always one of mixed emotions.  Our Year 6 pupils will soon begin preparing for their transition to secondary school, but before they go, they will continue creating memories to treasure for years to come.  One of their final leadership tasks will be to prepare job adverts and interview our current Year 5 pupils for next year’s school roles.  We are all eager to see the outcomes of their hard work and thoughtful decision‑making.

Miss Robinson and Mrs McKinnell were incredibly proud of Class Reception, who performed their Class Assembly yesterday.  It is remarkable to think that their first year at St Anne’s is almost complete.  All Reception places for September have now been offered, and we look forward to welcoming our new St Anne’s families at our Welcome Meeting on 10th June – 6:00 pm.

As many of you know, today is Mrs Sprigg’s final day with us.  Working in one school for 18 years is an extraordinary achievement, and during that time she has supported countless children across every year group.  Behind the scenes, she has been a highly organised and dedicated member of staff, always thinking ahead and always asking, “What about this for school?”

Naturally, after so many years at St Anne’s, her departure brings mixed emotions. We are deeply grateful for her commitment, her care, and her contribution to our school community.  We wish her every success and happiness as she embarks on her next chapter.

As the weather warms up, please ensure sun cream is applied before the school day begins.  To avoid taking time away from learning, we recommend long‑lasting sun protection (8‑hour formulas), as staff can only supervise children applying it themselves.  Sun hats are also encouraged — hopefully this sunshine is here to stay.

Mrs Brightman has been busy completing all financial processes for the 2025–2026 financial year.  If you would like to view the Governors’ Financial Statement, please call into the School Office and she will be happy to share it with you.

A huge thank‑you to the staff team, FOSAS members who supported last week’s school disco.  The children had a wonderful time, and we are grateful for the continued enthusiasm and energy that the small group of FOSAS brings to our school community.

A big well done to the children that represented the school in the Notts Swimming Gala final.  They were competing against the top 12 schools in the county and came a fantastic 4th place, narrowly missing out on a medal.  A big thank you to the adults who supported the organisation of the team and the parents that came to support on a very hot poolside!

Something for half term…..

The school was one of a number of organisations that took part in making a mural out of bottle tops as part of the North Notts Bid Mural Trail.  Josh’s (6) design was the one that was developed for the school and now the trail will be live from Monday 25th May – just in time for half term.  There are a number of leaflets available and the Trail Challenge element can also be completed digitally by using this link.

News from the Classes

Reception

This week, Reception class have been learning all about pets, exploring which animals make good pets and which do not.  They have been discussing how to care for a pet and have enjoyed writing fact sheets about looking after different animals.  In Maths, the children have continued to use the vocabulary first, then and now to describe number stories for addition and subtraction, helping them to clearly explain their thinking.

Class One

This week, Class 1 have been comparing different animals in Science.  They chose two animals and wrote about how these animals were different, for example, they may be carnivores or herbivores, mammals or fish, fur or scales.  They also wrote about how they were similar, such as, they have four legs or they are both carnivores.  They used the knowledge they have gained recently to complete their work.

Class Two

This week in Year 2, the children have been exploring fractions of shapes and numbers, focusing on a half and a quarter.  The children have become tiny little brown mice in English, and wrote a diary entry from the perspective of the mouse, they have used commas in list, conjunctions and similes. In RE, the children created posters to show our school values. In gymnastics, it was their last week on the apparatus, and children were focusing on how to do a backwards roll and complete an arabesque. In topic, the children used the ipads to research The Great Barrier Reef and make a poster about it. They have had a wonderful jam packed half term and are looking forward to the next one.

Class Three

Year 3 have had a busy week this week finishing off and consolidating the learning for the half term. In maths the children have worked hard on their statistics unit, interpreting and answering questions about bar charts and pictograms. In English the children have finished their newspaper reports producing some fantastic pieces of writing, they worked hard to edit their writing and to publish it in their best handwriting. In science, class three were investigating the effect of different surface on the speed of a balloon rocket. They tested which material the balloon moved fasted on and linked this to their knowledge of friction. In French the children have been practicing ordering ice cream cones and pots of different flavours. They learnt how to say I would like ‘Je Voudrais’ before selecting their flavour of choice.

Class Four

This week, Class 4 have begun an exciting new unit of learning in art, focusing on painting techniques. The children have been learning all about tertiary colours, tints, shades and tones, developing their understanding of how colours can be mixed and adapted to create different effects. They have also been working hard to improve their water control whilst using watercolour paints, showing increasing care and precision in their work. In the next lesson, the children will be learning how artists create perspective through the use of foreground, midground and background before applying these skills to complete a final piece inspired by Claude Monet.

Class Five

This week, Year 5 have explored co-ordinates and translation in Maths, developing their accuracy and confidence when plotting and moving shapes on a grid. In English, the children have written imaginative myths using Medusa as a model text, applying relative clauses, parentheses and ambitious descriptive language linked to the senses. In Music, pupils have enjoyed composing and performing their own melodies, showing creativity and growing confidence with rhythm and pitch. In History, the class compared and contrasted the different Ancient Greek city-states, exploring similarities and differences between places such as Athens and Sparta. During Young Leaders’ sessions, pupils developed their understanding of global issues and discussed how small actions at a local level can make a positive difference in the wider world. In PE, the children worked hard to improve their aiming skills in tennis, helping them to sustain longer rallies and demonstrate better control. The class also benefited from an informative visit from a PCSO, who spoke to the children about knife crime and the importance of making safe and responsible choices. Throughout all areas of learning, the children have shown enthusiasm, maturity and a willingness to reflect thoughtfully on the world around them.

Class Six

Class 6 have had another busy and engaging week with lots of fantastic learning taking place. In English, the children have been writing a balanced argument linked to our class text Holes. This has been supported by a brilliant class debate around Camp Green Lake, where the children confidently shared their opinions and listened thoughtfully to others. In topic, the children have been learning about the states of America, focusing on both human and physical geographical features. They have shown great interest in understanding how different areas compare and what makes each state unique. We have also begun preparations for our performance next half-term, with the children taking part in auditions and starting to learn the songs. There has been lots of enthusiasm and excitement, and it’s lovely to see their confidence growing. Finally, the children took part in a science day where they explored a variety of different experiments and had to work as a team to investigate different scientific principles.

Congratulations to our Stars of the Week this week

Well done to all pupils who received certificates this week.  Your hard work, positive attitudes, and kindness continue to make our school a wonderful place to learn.
