Spring 24: Friday 20 March 2026
Dear Parents and Carers,
The sunshine has made all the difference this week, and it has been lovely to see the children spread out on the field, playing together and enjoying the space. Across the school, classes have been working hard to bring their topic learning to a close, with assessments along the way that really highlight just how much progress they’ve made.
As previously shared, we continue to stress the importance of reading outside of school. The children are taught the skills in class, but practising these daily at home makes a huge difference to their confidence and fluency. Wednesday mornings are also the mornings to come to school a little earlier and read with your child in the classroom.
A big thank you to the Class 6 parents who attended the information evening about the statutory tests in May. Whilst these tests do not define a child, we encourage the pupils to do their best, and all we ask is that they keep up with their practice over the Easter break.
Class 3 entertained us brilliantly with their assembly all about the Romans, complete with a very catchy song and a recorder ensemble to finish - well done to every child involved.

This week also saw the football squad play a league home match against Misterton. It was a nail‑biting game that kept everyone on tenterhooks, ending in a 1–1 draw. That result means they are currently top of the division, but it all rests on the scores of the last 2 games for other schools.
They now move on to a cup game on Monday against Norbridge.
We are still on the lookout for bits of drainpipe, pallets, plastic supermarket trays, bricks and old tyres to help make playtimes more exciting and full of opportunities for discovery. Even better if you know anyone with access to the large wooden cable reels.
Congratulations to Mrs Dunnicliff, who had an unannounced inspection from Bassetlaw Environmental Health last Friday. We are over the moon that she is continuing her run of a 5* Food Hygiene Rating kitchen. Well done!
And finally, if you have no plans for the weekend, it’s that time of year again—time to boil an egg and get creative. We can’t wait to see what imaginative designs appear this year. Here’s one from last year!

Attendance
This week, the office team have attended the Notts County Council termly attendance briefing for schools. As the school holiday approaches please ensure that you are fully aware of the Attendance Policy and the Nottinghamshire County Council Code of Conduct for Attendance.
An unauthorised leave of absence of 5-days (10 sessions) (over a 10-week rolling period) for a leave of absence can lead to you being issued with a penalty notice fine of up to £160 for each child who is absent and must be paid within the statutory 28-day deadline. The fines can be issued to both parents for each child.
In some circumstances, the Local Authority may decide that a prosecution via Magistrates court is more suitable, for instance lengthy or repeated leave of absence periods. This would include circumstances where a parent/carer has already had two fines over a 3-year rolling period.
Please be aware that we will carrying out home checks for absence going forward, and if we become aware that time away from school is as a result of a holiday, it will be unauthorised and processed as set out above.

Breakfast Club
Adults need to accompany their children to the hall doors and sign their children in with the team.
Eco-committee

Eco-committee have been busy making bug habitats in preparation for developing the biodiversity of the school grounds. A big St Anne’s thank you to Mr Bradley from Templeborough Biomass Power station in Rotherham who has very kindly provided the school with a monetary donation to develop our eco vision further.
The eco-committee are now using their action plan to decide how they can best use this money.

News from the Classes
Reception
Reception have continued their work on ‘The Three Little Pigs ‘and have been using the story to support their learning across the week. The children have enjoyed exploring different materials and finding out what each material is used for in the world around them. They have also been learning about homes from the past, discovering how objects and household items have changed over time. The class have been fascinated by the differences between old and modern homes and have enjoyed comparing what we use today with what people used long ago.
Class One
This week, Class 1 were visited by a strange, yellow creature called Beegu. She crash landed in the Space Station role play, bringing stars and moon rocks with her. The children are enjoying her being part of the classroom and are desperate for her to stay, however, Miss DeCouto isn't a fan and wants to get rid of her. The children are using their writing skills to write down all the reasons why Beegu is a good person, and why she should stay. They are working very hard on convincing Miss DeCouto!
Class Two
In maths this week, Class 2 have been working really hard with assessments, they have been checking their new knowledge and identifying their progress. In English, the children have continued with their non-chronological reports – they have been looking into sub headings and key facts for our paragraphs, continuing to use expanded noun phrases, commas in a list and conjunctions. In RE, they have been continuing to look at the Easter story and how this impacts our lives. Dancing and gymnastics have been the exercise focus for the week. The class have looked at the ‘cat jump’ in gymnastics and are adding more moves to their under the sea themed dance. In History, the children finished their newspaper reports on the Creswell Mining Disaster and started to look at map symbols in Geography.
Class Three
Class 3 are now in full swing as they prepare for their Easter end-of-term service. The classroom has been filled with enthusiasm as pupils focus on learning their lines and practising songs, showing great dedication and teamwork as they get ready to perform. In Maths, the children have been working hard on adding and subtracting fractions. They have been developing their understanding step-by-step and are beginning to apply their knowledge with increasing confidence. In RE, the class has been exploring the question of why Christians call Good Friday “good,” even though it is a sad day. This has led to thoughtful discussions, with pupils reflecting on the meaning behind the day and its importance in the Christian faith. English lessons have focused on preparing for persuasive writing. The children are getting ready to write a letter to a Roman, attempting to persuade them to join the Roman army. They have been considering strong arguments and persuasive language to make their writing as effective as possible. In PE, the class has been enjoying dance, where they are exploring movement at different levels. They have been working collaboratively to perform sequences in unison and using cannon techniques, building both coordination and creativity.
Class Four
Class 4 have thoroughly enjoyed exploring the poem I Am a Viking as part of their performance poetry unit. They began by delving into the rich and powerful vocabulary within the poem, discussing how it creates vivid imagery and brings the Viking character to life. To support their understanding of performance, the children explored examples of Michael Rosen’s poetry performances, using these as inspiration for their own ideas. They recognised how actions, changes in pace, and variations in volume can enhance a performance, and thoughtfully applied these techniques as they worked together on presenting their class poem.
Class Five
This week in Class 5, the children have been looking at life cycles in science. They have learnt about the life cycles of amphibians, insects, birds and mammals, and have looked closely at two of these to compare their similarities and differences. They have been looking at cohesive devices in our writing, such as when to start a new paragraph and using adverbials of time and place. They have used an image from Egyptian Cinderella to write a setting description, ensuring that they focus on describing sight, sound, taste, touch, movement and smell. In PSHE, they have continued to look at their topic of ‘Healthy Me’, focusing on emergency aid and body image, and whether the media helps or hinders with this. They have finished their Maths block of learning on Decimals and Percentages and are confident converting from one form to another.
Class Six
This week in Class 6, the children have been busy building new skills across all areas of learning. In English, they’ve been developing their research and writing techniques as they work towards creating an informative leaflet all about Central America, closely linked to our Maya topic. In maths, the class has been exploring how to calculate the area of triangles and parallelograms, applying formulas with increasing accuracy and confidence. In science, the children have been learning how to classify plants, using observable features to group them and deepen their understanding of the natural world. Lots of SAT’s revision to ensure the children are developing various skills to help them be the best they can be.
Congratulations to our Stars of the Week this week
Well done to all pupils who received certificates this week. Your hard work, positive attitudes, and kindness continue to make our school a wonderful place to learn.

Prayers from – Ruby and Keira (6)
Dear God,
Grant our leaders wisdom, discernment and hearts that seek justice and truth. Deliver us Lord from harm and help us to trust in your protection.
Amen
Dear God
Grant us a vision of your world as your love would have it: a world where the weak are protected...a world where peace is built with justice, and justice is guided by love.
With my very best wishes for the weekend,
Mrs Middleton & the St Anne’s Team
