Autumn 1: Friday 19 September 2025

Dear Parents & Carers,

Last week, the children spent time exploring the wonderful stories and characters of Roald Dahl for ‘Roald Dahl Day’.  As we begin a new school year, we are focusing on nurturing good reading habits and encouraging a lifelong love of books. Whilst technology is an important part of family life today, developing strong reading skills and a rich vocabulary remains a crucial foundation for every child’s learning and success. Please support your child in encouraging them to read regularly, record in their reading diary and in turn this will lead to them becoming a ‘remarkable reader’.

Our local library has a fantastic selection of books for loan, and next week we are excited to welcome the ‘Book Fair’ to school. Please see the additional letter for further details.

Earlier this week, we had hoped to see more of you at our ‘Accelerated Reader Workshop’, which was mainly aimed at Year 3 families.  This workshop is designed to help you understand how your child’s reading level and book choices are guided by their fluency and comprehension.  We will be offering this session again soon – if the timing was difficult, please let us know whether a later slot would work better for you.

It was lovely to see such a good turnout for Upper Key Stage 2 football practice on Monday, despite the weather!  Our first match will be an away game next Monday. Training will still take place as normal for those not playing in this fixture.

You should also have received a separate letter about checking whether your child may be eligible for the Government’s Pupil Premium funding, based on free school meal entitlement. This is means-tested, but if your child qualifies, it provides valuable support such as help with school trip costs, uniform bundles, and additional learning support. Even if you’re unsure, it’s worth applying – you may be pleasantly surprised.

This weekend, St Anne’s Church will host the civil service for Tony Eaton. We are honoured that our school ambassadors will be present to represent the school, alongside a group of singers who will perform our special ‘100 Year Song’.

Finally, a reminder that next Friday the School Council and I will be hosting a Macmillan Coffee Afternoon from 2:30pm for the St Anne’s community. We would love to see as many of you as possible. Please feel free to pop in, donate a cake, or join in the fun – there will also be a raffle, so don’t forget to bring along some loose change! This event is a key event within the school calendar and your previous donations have always been so generous.

News from the Classes

Class Reception

This week Class Reception have been reading the story ‘Funny Bones’ to help them learn a little bit for about their bodies.  They have been labelling body parts and know that some parts are on the inside and some on the outside.  In Maths, they have been matching and sorting objects and using the vocabulary ‘same, different, match and group’.

Class One

This week, Class 1 have enjoyed exploring materials in science. They have been sorting objects based on what material they are made from and have started thinking about properties of materials. They identified that materials can be hard or soft, rigid or bendy, rough or smooth, shiny or dull, and they used this information to make 'feely boards' to tell others all about the properties of materials.

Class Two

Class 2 have enjoyed building more vocabulary for their story about Queen Victoria and the bathing machine, thinking about how to describe the setting. In music children loved echoing 'boom chicka boom.’

During their art lesson they created patterns similar to William Morris and discussed what are responsibilities are during PSHE with Jigsaw Jo.  In history, they have been exploring the toys and games of Victorian children and how different their lives were to ours. In maths sessions they’ve been continuing to explore place value and focusing on partitioning numbers to 100 and how they can represent them.

Class Three

It has been a busy week in Class 3 with learning in full swing. In Music, the children learnt the value of crochets, minims and quavers and used this to clap simple 4 beat rhythms. In French, Class 3 have been learning different greetings and used their new vocabulary to ask somebody how they are (Ca va) and how to reply by saying: ca va bien, ca va mal or comme si comme sa. In whole class reading the children were excited to start their new class text called ‘Terrible True Tale: The Stone Age’. The children made predictions about what they thought would happen and summarised what had happened so far. In English, the children have started writing their narrative based on the story ‘Stone Age boy’.

Class Four

This week, in geography, Class 4 has been learning about the physical geography of South America.  They have learned about the features of mountains, including peaks, aretes, scree, glaciers, tree lines, and snow lines.  They looked for these features in the Andes Mountain Range while learning many key facts.

Class Five

The children are continuing to enjoy their whole class reading book, ‘Cosmic by Frank Cottrell-Boyce’; this week they have been predicting what will happen next to the main character Liam. Their maths learning continues apace with ‘the power of 10’ partitioning numbers and number lines up to 1,000,000.   Class 5’s writing has begun to look at ‘Curiosity’ the Mars Rover and this has created a real buzz of excitement with everyone, with some children finding information about the Rover from different books around school. All the children are really enjoying their Earth and Space learning, and Mrs. Adams has already received some super home learning examples – which are proudly displayed in the classroom, keep it up year 5 you’re all brilliant!

Class Six

Class 6 this week have been completing their first piece of independent writing, a setting description based on ‘Letters from the Lighthouse’. The children have been consolidating their learning on descriptive language and learning how to add in figurative language features. In maths, the children have completed their first block on place value and are now revising their understanding of addition and subtraction, both arithmetic and reasoning style questions. In other news, being able to draw electrical circuits accurately has been a focus in science. In history, they have been exploring WW2, the Blitz and its impact on Sheffield.
