Autumn 1: Friday 12 September 2025

Dear Parents & Carers

It has been a pleasure to see the children settling so well into their classroom routines this week. In our collective worship, we explored the value of generosity—looking at how we can be generous with our time, kindness, and actions, without it needing to involve money. We also shared the American story of Johnny Appleseed, which helped us reflect on how small acts of kindness can grow into something much bigger.

Break Time Snacks and Lunches

A reminder of our break time rules:

  • Children may bring a piece of fruit, or alternatively, a school snack prepaid on Abor for a crumpet or tea cake (pizza muffin on Friday’s)
  • Children in Class R, 1 and 2 are provided with a piece of fruit through the Government funded fruit scheme
  • Sweets and chocolate are not permitted
  • Packed lunches should be healthy and nutritionally balanced. Our caterers must follow strict nutritional standards, and in the interest of fairness and wellbeing, we ask that packed lunches reflect these standards too. Children with a ‘packed lunch’ should not have sweets in their lunch box.

We are also a nut-free school. With a significant number of children living with life-threatening nut allergies, we kindly ask for your support in keeping our school environment safe. This includes avoiding foods that contain nuts.

Prime Minister’s Letter

The Prime Minister has written a letter to parents and carers regarding giving children the best start in life. Please follow the link to read it:

Secondary School Admissions (Year 6 Families)

If your child is currently in Year 6, applications for secondary school places for September 2026 are now open.  The deadline for applications is 31st October. Please ensure you:

  • Check your child’s catchment school using the NCC website tool.
  • Carefully read the admissions criteria for your chosen schools before applying.

Asthma Pumps and Inhalers
We will shortly be auditing our records and contacting families of children who have ever had asthma noted on their school file. This is to confirm whether your child currently has a prescribed inhaler and to complete the necessary medical form.

Thank you for your continued support in helping us create a safe, caring, and nurturing school environment for every child.

Child Protection & Safeguarding

We have updated our Child protection and safeguarding in line with the updated government and local guidance.

Our school is part of Operation Encompass which is a national scheme that operates jointly between schools and police forces. Operation Encompass is the reporting of police-attended domestic abuse incidents to schools, prior to the start of the next school day, where there are children in the home (whether they were present at the time of the incident).

Operation Encompass will ensure that a member of the school staff, (Designated Safeguarding Lead) is trained to allow them to liaise with the police and to use the information that has been shared in confidence.  This will ensure that we as a school are able to work with agencies to make provision for possible difficulties experienced by children, and their families, who have experienced a domestic abuse incident.

Online Safety Reminder

As the nights begin to draw in and children spend more time indoors, we encourage families to revisit online safety procedures at home. Please speak with your child about safe internet use, privacy settings, and responsible digital behaviour. Our school will continue to reinforce these messages through the computing curriculum and assemblies.

Y6 PGL Residential Parent Meeting

News from the Classes

Class Reception

Class Reception have had a wonderful first full week in school. They have lined up beautifully in the morning, before saying goodbye to their parents, to come into school. They are getting used to their carpet spaces and learning how to sit smartly on the carpet as well as learning the Five Golden Rules.  They have been listening to the story ‘It’s Ok to be Different’ and sharing things that make them different such as their name, favourite colours and pets.

Class One

Class 1 have settled in well to their new classroom, and they have shown just how hard-working and sensible they are. They have enjoyed being sentence detectives, finding where capital letters and full stops are missing from sentences. They have been using magnifying glasses to take a closer look at the sentences and were very cross with Miss DeCouto for forgetting her capital letters and full stops!

Class Two

In Class 2 this week, children have worked hard to settle in and adapt to their new routines and new teachers! They have all done an amazing job this week, what a lovely class; Mrs Stocks and Mis McDonald are very lucky to spend the whole year with them! The children have started their Class 2 phonics looking at the grapheme 'dge' and 'ge' and learning new words. In English, they have listened to ‘Queen Victoria's Bathing Machine’ and begun to learn new ambitious vocabulary such as 'notion' and 'petticoat’. They have also started to explore their new topic of the Victorians and have been asking lots of questions about what they want to find out. The children have also been exploring our new style of writing using leading lines in handwriting lessons and what technology looks like in our computing sessions.

During maths lessons, they have been showing off their counting skills and making 2-digit numbers using base 10 and 10 frames. In Fluency Bee sessions they’ve been focusing on the numbers 6 and 7, how they can make them, partition them, identify them in different ways.

In PE children were practising their throwing and catching and used these skills in a little class competition, working on balancing which is one of their fundamental skills.

Thank you to one of the children for bringing in their Roald Dahl book, so the children could all listen to ‘The Magic Finger’ to help celebrate the author.

It's been such a positive start in Class 2 and to see the smile on the children's faces has been amazing :)

Class Three

Class 3 have had a fantastic first week back throwing themselves in to their Class 3 learning.  In history, they have been learning about the three different periods of the Stone Age and the changes in houses and tools from the Palaeolithic era to the Neolithic era.  In science year three have been learning about the nutrients found within foods and the different food groups. They were tasked with sorting foods into the different groups and explaining which nutrients each food contained. In English, Class 3 have started their narrative unit by reading the book ‘Stone Age Boy’; they have started to think about the features required in a narrative and the characters and setting in the story. Class 3 were excited to start their French learning and enjoyed learning the French alphabet and some French phonics.

Class Four

This week class four have begun writing a newspaper report using the book, 'There's a Rang-Tan in my bedroom' by James Sellick.  Class four have amazed Miss Broughton with their creative ideas and their willingness to learn about world issues such as deforestation.  Their English learning links to their geography topic of South America which is ensuring they are learning many key facts.

Class Five

The children have settled into Class 5 well and they were very welcoming to Mrs Adams on Monday, which was lovely ðŸ˜Š They have really enjoyed the beginning of their class read, ‘Cosmic by Frank Cottrell-Boyce’. There have been some great discussions around how the main character is finding himself in rather unusual situations. Their maths learning is challenging them with numbers up to 1,000,000, but they are rising to that challenge with a very positive attitude.  By the end of today, they will have completed their first piece of writing, a non-chronological report about one of the planets in our universe. They are looking wonderful already and Mrs Adams is looking forwards to being able to have some of them up on display.

Class Six

A full-on start to the year in Class 6!  The children have started straight away with their learning in all subjects to start their journey towards SAT’s in May. In Maths, the children have been consolidating their learning on place value, being able to read and write numbers up to 10,000,000. In English, they have been building up to write an effective, Class 6 level setting description based on their class book ‘Letters from the Lighthouse’. For their science topic, they are learning about electricity. This week saw them recap their knowledge from Class 4 ready to progress to Class 6 Learning.
