St Anne’s C of E (A) Primary News
“Developing the whole child, spiritually, mentally and physically in a caring Christian
environment through close links to the Church and Community”
Dear Parents & Carers,
What a fantastic week it has been! We’ve had an incredible time celebrating Science Week and International Women’s Day, with so many wonderful experiences for the children.
One of the highlights was the planetarium visit, which left the children truly enthralled as they explored the wonders of the Universe. It was a joy to see their excitement and curiosity sparked by this immersive experience.
We were also delighted to welcome parents into school for various class-based science workshops throughout the week. Your participation made these sessions even more special, and it was wonderful to see children and families engaging in learning together. This all culminated in a fantastic celebration on Thursday, where we recognised the achievements of our young scientists and those who showcased their science projects from home.
Beyond the classroom, our children have been showcasing their skills on the football field, demonstrating great teamwork and sportsmanship. Wednesdays continue to be full of music, as our young musicians develop their talents through instrumental tuition—it’s a pleasure to hear their progress each week!
A big well done to all the children who entered the science fair.
A special mention to our winners:
- 1st Harriet FW - Y3
- 2nd Alex G - Y1
- 3rd Darcie - Y6
Thank you for your ongoing support in making these experiences so enriching for our children. We look forward to even more exciting learning opportunities in the weeks to come!
Celebrating 100 Years of St Anne’s
If you would like to support Mrs Middleton in planning for a ‘100 year’ celebration of all that is St Anne’s and what makes our school so special, you are invited into a ‘Cup of tea and planning session’ this afternoon at 2pm.
Do you know anyone who attended St Anne’s? Anyone who has memories that they would be willing to share or photos/memorabilia from their time at the school – if so, please get in touch.
Sporting news
A big well done to both football teams this week. The boys lost 4-1 to Gateford but they conceded some unlucky goals and worked hard together as a team. The girls won their game 2-1 against Gateford, their positivity and team spirit were contagious, and they worked hard to secure the win.
FOSAS News (Friends of St Anne’s)
Following their last meeting, the FOSAS group are all set for the ‘Mother’s Day Secret Giftshop’. This will take place on the 26th and 27th March after school. If the weather is dry the stall with the special goods will be on the KS2 playground. Items are priced at £2 and £3, and we hope the children will support this event and treat the special lady in their families.
Can you believe we are approaching Easter? FOSAS will host an Easter Event – 3rd April 2025. There will be an ‘Easter Egg Decorating competition with all entries submitted on the day as well as cake stall, colouring and guess the weight of the cake. They would be grateful for any cakes…….. AND let’s not forget an EASTER EGG HUNT around the school grounds. Look out for the posters.
Stories in a Box
We were blown away by the level of detail in the entries last week and a big well done to everyone who took the time to enter. The three winning entries came from Class 5, 1 and Class Reception. The winning entries are on display in the main foyer of school.
Red Nose Day next Friday
We will be ‘going red’ in recognition of Red Nose Day next Friday 21st March. Children are invited to wear something red, in return for a donation for the charity.

News from the Classes
Class Reception
This week Class Reception have been reading the traditional tale ‘The Three Little Pigs’. Linked to this they have been developing their knowledge of material, names, where they come from and talking about some of their properties. They had a super session in the planetarium and learnt all about nocturnal animals before looking at constellations they may see in the sky.
Class One
Class One started the week with a science workshop where parents were invited in. The theme was 'Change and Adapt', so the children created a moth that could camouflage somewhere within our playground. They used natural materials such as leaves and sticks to camouflage their moths. Miss DeCouto then had to see if she could find them, and they were very well camouflaged! Following this, they visited the mobile planetarium, which has been in to enhance their history learning about Space. The children looked at the planets and learnt more information about the first people and animals to go to Space. They impressed the workshop leader with all their wonderful knowledge.
Class Two
This week, in Georgraphy they have been learning all about the difference between physical and human features. The children talked about our local area, using maps to help them. The children then wrote about each feature in Worksop as if they worked for 'Tourist Information.'
Class Three
This week in Class 3, the children have been finishing their first version of a diary entry by Romulus and Remus. The children have built up writing skills using conjunctions, 1st person and past tense consistently. They also had to practise their proof-reading skills to check for the Class 3 non-negotiables such as capital letters and full stops. In Maths, the children have consolidated their learning about fractions and have started the next unit on mass and capacity.
Class 3 had the opportunity to visit and share an experience about Space travel in the planetarium. This was an amazing opportunity, and the children thoroughly enjoyed every part. Not only did the planetarium visit us, Class 3 also had science activities to complete as part of national science week. As the current science topic in Class 3 is ‘Plants’, the children were involved in creating different wormeries to develop compost for the school flower beds and planting a variety of seeds to see how they develop in different conditions around the school site. The class will be monitoring them through the next few months to see how they grow.
Class Four
Class 4 started the week by celebrating British science week. They enjoyed testing the PH of different household substances using cabbage water as part of their parent workshop. In history, Class 4 have focused on chronology- looking at the key dates during the Viking era in Britain, and creating a timeline to show this. In English, they have been writing their explanation texts based on the book ‘How to be a Viking’. The children worked hard on their drafts and redrafts as part of the focus for their writing this week. In PE, the children have enjoyed their gymnastics session with Emma and have been working on dance in their other PE slot.
Class Five
Class 5 have embraced Science week this week by investigating the rates at which different types of sugar dissolve in the parent workshop. They also learnt about the links between Space and Greek mythology when the planetarium visited the hall. This learning will be useful next tern when the history focus becomes the Ancient Greeks. In recognition of both Science week and International Women’s Day, the whole class reading has been biographies of inspirational women, including Marie Curie and Mary Anning. In history, the class discovered what it had been like to be a female ruler in Ancient Egypt, whilst writing diaries of Howard Carter gave the children the chance to imagine how exciting his discovery of Tutankhamun’s tomb would have been.
Class Six
This week Class 6 have celebrated British Science Week by considering how we can help protect the environment and adapt some of our own behaviours. Parents came in to support our investigation, which was great, the children had a lot of fun. In maths, children have begun to look at area and perimeter and apply their prior learning to more complex word problems. In writing, children have created descriptions of their creatures, using figurative language and ambitious vocabulary. During history, they became historians, and used evidence to help them better understand how we know about the Ancient Maya. On top of all this, children have been preparing their DART assembly and doing some practice SATs questions.
Congratulations to our Stars of the Week this week
