Dear Parents and Carers,

Firstly, a huge thank you to everyone who supported our recent Summer Fair.  Thanks to your generosity and the hard work of our PTA, volunteers and staff, we raised approximately £900!  This money will go directly to FOSAS to continue subsidising school trips, experiences and resources for our children.  Your support really does make a difference.

School Trips

We are incredibly proud of the wide range of educational visits and experiences we offer throughout the year, as we know these create lasting memories and enrich our curriculum.  However, we wanted to share a little more about the financial realities of organising trips.

As a school, we are charged an entry fee for every individual child attending, in addition to the ever-increasing cost of coach transport.  For children who are eligible for benefits-related support, trip costs are assisted through our Pupil Premium funding.

Like many schools, we continue to face significant budget pressures, and unfortunately we are no longer in a position to subsidise shortfalls from the school’s budget.  Going forward, if a trip does not receive sufficient voluntary contributions to cover its costs, we may have to cancel it.  We sincerely hope this will not be necessary, as educational visits are such a valuable part of school life, and we thank you in advance for your continued support in helping us provide these opportunities.

Football Team Season Celebration

Mr Nunn, who has the responsibility for organising schools’ football in Bassetlaw, presented our school football team with their Division 3 Football League Winners’ Trophy during Monday’s celebration assembly.  This is a fantastic achievement and reflects the commitment, teamwork and determination shown by every player throughout the season. Mr Richards and I are incredibly proud of them.

    

Sporting Success

It has been another wonderful week for sport.  Our Key Stage 2 children finished the sporting calendar in style with a fantastic second half of Sports Day.  Individual children in their PE lessons have shown their enthusiasm, teamwork and resilience throughout the year, and this latest success is a fitting way to round off another excellent sporting season.  The overall positions for KS2 Sports were:

We are also delighted to announce that our school has been awarded the National PE Quality Mark with Distinction.  This prestigious recognition celebrates our commitment to providing high-quality physical education, promoting healthy lifestyles and ensuring every child has the opportunity to enjoy, achieve and develop confidence through sport and physical activity.  This is a wonderful accolade for our staff and pupils alike, and one we are immensely proud to receive.  My thanks extend to Miss Burgoyne who has led on this initiative.

Year 6 Celebration

This evening we look forward to our Key Stage 2 Disco (5.00-6.30pm £3.00), where we will celebrate our wonderful Class 6 pupils, as they approach the end of their primary school journey.

Next week will be their final week with us before they move on to secondary school.  It seems only yesterday that many of them began school during the uncertainty of the COVID pandemic, when school life looked very different.  Over the past seven years they have grown into confident, resilient young people, and it has been a privilege to watch them develop.  This week their SATS results came out, but as I have said a child’s development goes beyond the data, and it is how each child is a unique child of God – with their many talents.  We look forward to celebrating their many achievements during their final week and wish them every success as they prepare for the exciting adventures ahead.

Summer holiday fun at the local library

We’ll be inspiring children to explore the rhythm and melody of reading in the 2026 Summer Reading Challenge.  Read to the Beat will celebrate music and sound - exploring how music and storytelling unite.

Children are invited to borrow and read library books over the summer.  There are stickers to collect, with a medal and certificate for those who complete six reading goals of their choosing!

Innovate – School Dinners

We will be moving to a new supplier for our school dinners in September.  This will involve an app called ‘School Grid’.  Please look out for an alert about this in the coming weeks.  School dinners will need to be booked and paid for in advance.  Please ensure that you do this, as they have strict policy when dinners are not booked and paid for in advance.

HAF (Holiday Activity and Food Programme)

The HAF programme offers FREE, funded holiday activity places for children receiving benefits-related Free School Meals (there is a leaflet attached to the newsletter email).

All eligible children and young people will be able to access the following days as part of the Holiday Activities and Food (HAF) programme each year.

• Four days of face-to-face activity in spring, autumn, and winter
• Twelve days of face-to-face activity in summer

Programmes are a minimum of four hours of activity and include a meal each day of the programme.  Attendance is voluntary, but places will need to be booked in advance. The offer will differ between providers, but all clubs will include physical activity, enrichment, food/nutrition education and a meal to replace the term time free school meal.

Who is eligible?

The HAF programme is open to children and young people aged between 5 and 16 years (age 4 if in reception class full-time). Fully funded places are offered to those receiving benefits-related free school meals.  This is different from the universal infant free school meals that children receive in reception, year 1 and year 2.

Most HAF venues also have places that can be paid for. 

If you think you are eligible for free school meals but you have not applied, you can apply for free school meals here.

If you are not in receipt of benefits related free school meals, but believe you could be entitled to a discretionary place, please ask a professional working with you or your child/children to complete a referral form [Word].

Special educational needs and disabilities (SEND) support

Our universal holiday club’s welcome children and young people with SEND who can take part in a mainstream setting with reasonable adjustments in place.

News from the Classes

Reception

This week, Reception Class enjoyed an exciting visit to White Post Farm, where they had the opportunity to feed, stroke, hold and learn more about a variety of farm animals.  The children were wonderfully behaved throughout the day and represented the school brilliantly.  We would like to extend a huge thank you to our parent helpers for supporting the trip and helping to make it such a success.  In Maths, the children have been learning how to count on to find answers to addition calculations.  Using number lines and practical resources, they have been finding a starting number and then counting on to add more.  The children have shown growing confidence with this important skill and have enjoyed practising their counting in a range of engaging activities.

Class One

This week, Class 1 visited White Post Farm with Class Reception and enjoyed a fantastic day of learning and adventure.  The children loved exploring the farm, meeting a variety of animals and getting up close to some of their favourites.  They had the opportunity to hold and stroke gentle animals such as rabbits, guinea pigs and chicks, and were excited to feed goats and other farm animals around the farm.  One of the highlights of the day was the tractor ride, where the children enjoyed looking around the farm and spotting different animals along the way.  They were amazed by the larger animals too, including pigs and cows.  The children also enjoyed visiting the reptile house, where they saw fascinating creatures such as snakes and lizards. Another memorable part of the visit was the birds of prey area.  The children were amazed by the size and beauty of the owls, hawks and other majestic birds.  Thank you to the helpers that joined the class on their trip!

    

Class Two

In Year 2 the children this week have been looking into Statistics, focusing on tally charts and tables and how they record the information. In English, the children have explored adverbs and started to plan their narrative about a meerkat. Children were exploring different types of rolls in gymnastics and the skills needed to gain one of their apparatus certificates this week, testing their balancing, jumping and core strength. The children continued to explore Animals Including Humans in Science, looking at what animals and humans need to survive and how they stay healthy and clean.  In DT, the children evaluated their pizzas and discussed whether they would make any changes next time.  In Phonics, the children explored contractions and use the apostrophes for different reasons.

Class Three

In Maths, the children have been exploring the properties of 2D and 3D shapes.  They have been identifying and describing different shapes, recognising their features, including the number of sides, vertices, edges and faces, and using mathematical vocabulary to explain their reasoning.   In English, the class have continued developing their narrative writing by creating detailed character and setting descriptions.  They have used ambitious vocabulary to make their writing engaging and have begun planning the plot and ending of their own stories, carefully considering how to build excitement and bring their narratives to a satisfying conclusion.  In Geography, Class 3 have been researching a range of natural disasters before creating informative booklets to present their findings.  The children have explored the causes and effects of different natural disasters and have enjoyed showcasing their research through well-presented, informative pieces of work. In French, the children have been developing their conversational skills by learning how to order different quantities of fruit. They have practised key vocabulary and sentence structures, growing in confidence when speaking and listening in French.  In RE, the class have explored the meanings of the words prophet and matriarch, linking these important terms to key religious stories and discussing the significant roles these individuals played within different faiths.  In Computing, Class 3 have continued to develop their coding skills using Scratch. They have created simple programs, explored sequencing and algorithms, and learned how to debug their code by identifying and correcting errors to ensure their programs worked successfully.

Class Four

This week, Class 4 travelled back to 1588 to investigate one of the most significant events in Tudor history – the attempted invasion of England by the Spanish Armada. The children explored why King Philip II of Spain launched his attack, considering the political and religious tensions between England and Spain, before discovering how the English navy, clever tactics and the challenging weather combined to defeat the mighty Armada. They then took on the role of historians, discussing why this famous victory was such a turning point in our nation's history. The children impressed us with their thoughtful ideas, explaining how the defeat of the Spanish Armada helped secure England's independence, strengthened Queen Elizabeth I's reign and shaped the country's future for generations to come.

Class Five

What a fantastic week it has been in Class 5!  I would like to congratulate everyone on the effort and determination they have shown during our end-of-term assessments. The children have approached each task with maturity, resilience, and a positive attitude, giving their very best throughout the week. It has been wonderful to see them remain focused and demonstrate just how much they have learned over the course of the year.

One of the highlights of the week was our Wednesday Welcome session.  The children had a great time getting to know members of the group by playing the classic 'Two Truths and a Lie' game, which sparked lots of laughter and interesting conversations. They also enjoyed playing a variety of games and chatting.  It was particularly lovely to see some of the children learning how to crochet, showing patience, creativity, and a willingness to develop a new skill.  We are looking forward to a music concert next week!

We were also delighted to finally take part in Sports Day Part 2. The children showed fantastic enthusiasm, teamwork, determination, and excellent sportsmanship throughout the events.  It was wonderful to see everyone encouraging one another, celebrating successes, and giving every activity their best effort.

To round off an already exciting week, we are all looking forward to the school disco tonight. It promises to be a brilliant way to celebrate all of the hard work and achievements of this term.

Class Six

Class 6 have had another busy and productive week with lots taking place.  As we approach the end of the school year, the children have been spending time preparing for the Leavers’ Service, reflecting on their time at St Anne’s and helping to make this occasion meaningful for everyone.  In class, they have been completing a project all about North America. The children have been developing their geographical knowledge through map work, while also applying their skills in maths and writing to explore different aspects of the continent creating a ‘travel agent trip’. They have approached the project with enthusiasm and curiosity, producing some fantastic work. The children also took part in a road safety talk delivered by VIA. This provided valuable reminders about staying safe when travelling and helped the children understand the importance of making sensible choices as they become more independent.
