Summer 28: Friday 8 May 2026

Friday 8th May 2026

Dear Parents and Carers,

What a short week it has been — short due to the bank holiday but full of energy nonetheless. Even with the unusual rhythm, the children have shown real focus and enthusiasm.

On Wednesday, I had the pleasure of taking four children to Southwell Minster to participate in Collective Worship Leader training. Their participation was an absolute joy to see — thoughtful, confident, and full of ideas. They are already keen to put their new skills into action back at school, and I know they will help enrich our worship times for everyone.

Collective worship is an important part of our school day. Our teachers and church team work closely to ensure children have opportunities to deepen their understanding of Christianity, explore other faiths, reflect on current affairs, and hear stories that show our Christian values lived out in real life. It is a special time where our community comes together to think, reflect, and grow.

One of the things I treasure most about working in a school is the constant reminder of how quickly time moves. The weeks roll by, milestones come and go, and suddenly we find ourselves approaching the end of another school year. Yet what makes this journey so special is the sense of community that carries us through — the way staff, families, and children support one another, celebrate together, and face challenges as a team.

As we step into the summer term, the calendar fills rapidly. We are preparing for statutory assessments next week, organising transition arrangements, welcoming our new September Reception families, writing reports, planning sports day, rehearsing the Year 5/6 production, arranging trips, and so much more. It is a busy time, but also a joyful one — a chance to see how far the children have come.

This term is also a moment of reflection for them. Soon they will look back at the first pages of their books from September and compare them with the progress they have made. It’s a powerful reminder of their hard work and resilience. Please do encourage your child to talk about their learning at home; sharing their knowledge helps strengthen it and builds confidence.

Finally, a small request from us to you. We are preparing for our OPAL outdoor play launch in September, and we are hoping to gather a range of loose‑parts materials to enrich the children’s play. So far, we have had a zero response to our appeal — and we know our community can do better than that! If you have any items such as drainpipe, old tyres, crates, cable reels, guttering, dressing‑up clothes, small‑world toys, or anything tucked away in a shed or garage that could spark imaginative play, we would be incredibly grateful.  We have visited a school in a neighbouring town where all of these items have made such a difference to playtime.

Quad Kids

Last Friday, some Class 5 children participated in Quad Kids at Retford Oaks Academy.  They participated in various athletic activities including, 400m run and 50m sprint, long jump, and throwing.  The children really enjoyed themselves.

News from the Classes

Reception

This week, Class Reception have been learning all about pets using the story ‘Six Dinner Sid’. In the story, Sid is not very healthy, so the children have been exploring different ways they can keep themselves healthy and why this is important.  In maths, the children have been learning about addition and subtraction.  They have continued to practise the skill of putting the biggest number in their head to help them solve number problems more confidently.

Class One

This week, Class 1 have been learning all about animals.  They have spent time sorting animals based on whether they have scales, fur or feathers.  Then, they started learning about the five main animal groups; mammals, amphibians, birds, reptiles and fish.  They learnt about the key features of each animal group, using these features to identify which groups animals belong to.

Class Two

In Class 2, the children have been focusing on writing and editing their descriptions, they have focused on writing in the third person as well as using a variety of descriptive language.   The children have really enjoyed reading and exploring the book ‘The Koala Who Could,’ it has helped us to understand Australia more when focusing in our topic lessons.  This week, In Geography, the children have looked at Australia’s climate zones and were surprised to see that there were very different climates there.   The children have continued to work on their fundamental skills in PE, focusing on kicking and throwing as well as trying to showcase their skills in gymnastics to work towards their next achievements.  The children were very pleased that Emma got out the apparatus for them to use again this week, they climbed, jumped and leaped using their skills they have built up over the last few weeks.  In maths, the children have been focusing on volume and capacity, they have been looking at the difference between the two and exploring different volumes.  In handwriting, the children have been continuing to practise their pre-cursive style.  They have focused on dictation; listening to words and sentences and used their listening skills to write down what they have heard. In music, the children have been looking at clapping and performing 4-beat rhythms.

Class Three

In Class 3 this week, the children have been working hard across a range of exciting subjects.  In Maths, they have been developing their understanding of money by adding amounts and finding change. In English, the class has been learning how to punctuate speech correctly and use adverbs to add detail and interest to their writing, in preparation for creating newspaper reports about the eruption of Mount Vesuvius.  In Geography, the children have been plotting volcanoes and earthquakes around the world and exploring how these natural events are connected. In Design and Technology, the class has been carefully measuring and sawing wood as they prepare to build their own catapults.

Class Four

This week in Science, Class 4 have been learning about living things and their habitats, with a particular focus on food chains.  The children explored key scientific vocabulary such as predator, prey, producer and consumer, and used this language confidently during class discussions and activities.  They enjoyed researching and creating their own food chains while developing the important scientific skill of asking and answering questions.  Next week, the children will extend their learning further by exploring food webs and discovering just how interconnected living things are within different habitats.

 Class Five

This week, Edie, Sonia, Heidi and Thomas attended specialised training for pupil leadership of collective worship, and represented the school with maturity, enthusiasm and pride.  They thoroughly enjoyed the day, engaging confidently with activities and sharing thoughtful ideas throughout.  They have already begun developing new suggestions to bring back into school, showing real excitement about collective worship and their growing leadership roles.

The class worked confidently on identifying, comparing, and measuring angles in Class 5 math - using protractors with increasing accuracy. They also wrote detailed setting descriptions inspired by Ancient Greece, focusing on vivid vocabulary and sensory imagery.  In the Archbishop’s Young Leaders’ Award sessions, the children explored what it means to be part of the National Community, and discussed the responsibilities we all share.  During PE, they developed their tennis skills by practising controlled volleying and improving their coordination.  In music, they composed a four‑bar melody using the notes C, D and E, applying their understanding of crotchets, minims and quavers.  The class showed great enthusiasm across all subjects and demonstrated real pride in their learning.

Young Leaders Challenge

Class 5 are currently working on the Young Leaders Challenge. Each week coming up with a task which they can use to recognise leadership skills.  A group of Class 5 children (and a couple of younger siblings) carried out a litter pick on our neighbouring field.  Well done!

Class Six

Class 6 have had another focused and productive week as we get closer to SATs.  In English, the children have been proof-reading, editing and improving their narratives based on ‘Holes’. They have worked really hard to refine their writing, making thoughtful improvements to vocabulary, sentence structure and punctuation to ensure their final pieces are of a high standard.   In maths, the focus has been on position and direction, with the children developing their understanding of coordinates using all four quadrants.  This has required lots of careful thinking, but the class have shown great determination and are building confidence with this topic.  In science, we have been exploring what is in our blood.  The children have enjoyed learning about the different components and their functions, with some fantastic discussions and curiosity shown throughout.  In topic, the class have continued their work on the geography of North America, deepening their understanding of the continent and its key features.  Alongside all of this, the children have been completing their final revision in preparation for SATs next week.  They have shown a brilliant attitude and real commitment—we are very proud of all their hard work.

Keep it up, Class 6!

Congratulations to our Stars of the Week this week

Please use your Arbor App to check your current child’s attendance.  Scroll up on your home page and you will see it for this year.

Increasingly, time is being taken away from having to do home visits in relation to attendance as part of overall safeguarding procedures and national expectations for school attendance, please take a look at future holiday patterns when considering your next holiday.

Prayer from Toby and Sophie (6)

Dear God

Help to take care of our forest and the animals inside of them.

Amen

Dear God

Help us to treat everyone and everything with respect, and for us to know that it does not matter how old you are, you can make a difference.

Amen

So, as we end the week with an array of colour in school, we recognise the 100th birthday of David Attenborough (pictures next week).  We have encouraged our children to reflect on the ‘wonderful world’ we know as God’s creation.
