Spring 15: Friday 9 January 2026
“Developing the whole child, spiritually, mentally and physically in a caring Christian environment through close links to the Church and Community”
Friday 9th January 2025
Dear Parents and Carers,
I would like to warmly welcome everyone back to school as we begin the spring term. I hope you all enjoyed a restful festive break and had a positive start to the New Year. Happy 2026 to you all - we hope that the year ahead will be a happy and successful one, filled with wonderful learning opportunities and memorable experiences for our children.
I am also very pleased to welcome Mrs Marshall, who joins us this term as our new Deputy Head Teacher and Class 5 Teacher. Mrs Marshall is based in Class 5 in Key Stage 2, and will be a key point of contact for KS2. She has been busy this week getting to know the pupils and settling into school life, and we are delighted to have her as part of our leadership team.
The first week of term has brought some challenges with the recent cold spell. We kindly ask that all children come to school each day with a warm coat, as we believe it is important for them to go outside for fresh air during the school day, even in colder weather. For any new parents to school, should we ever have to close due to snow on health and safety grounds or any other reason, you will receive a message through your Arbor app. The decision is never taken lightly.
Yesterday, we were delighted to welcome Mr Hughesman, Marketing Manager from
Doncaster Rovers, who was accompanied by Donny Dog, to lead our assembly. They proudly shared the League Two Trophy and spoke to the children about the key values of resilience, teamwork and aspiration - values we actively promote and celebrate through our weekly celebration assemblies.
The children thoroughly enjoyed the visit, and there will be an opportunity for them to receive free tickets to a future game, with discounted tickets available form accompanying adults.
Our diary dates for the Spring term have now been updated and are available for you to view. Please take some time to look through what is planned for the term ahead, as we have many exciting events, activities and learning opportunities coming up.
A reminder regarding Breakfast Club: parents and carers are required to bring their child to the hall door and sign them in on arrival. Once signed in, we ask that children are dropped at the door, so that they can enter the hall independently. Thank you for your cooperation in helping us maintain a safe and smooth start to the day.
As we begin a new term, we would also like to thank you for your continued support with attendance, punctuality and ensuring children are ready for learning each day with the correct uniform and equipment. Working together helps us provide the best possible environment for all our pupils.
Thank you for your ongoing support. We look forward to a productive and enjoyable spring term ahead.
Plastic Bottle Tops – Great News!
We are still collecting plastic lids!!
We welcome clean plastic bottle lids of all colours and sizes (no more than half an inch/12mm deep). These are some of the most common types you can collect:
- Hair product lids – shampoo, conditioner, hair masks, styling products
- Fabric conditioner lids
- Drink bottle lids – water, juice, fizzy drinks, etc.
- Cooking oil bottle lids
- Laundry detergent and softener lids
- Cleaning product lids – including surface sprays, floor cleaners, toilet cleaners
- Body wash and shower gel lids
- Mouthwash bottle lids
- Deodorant lids – especially from roll-ons and sprays
- Sauce lids – such as red and brown sauce bottle tops
Other recycled plastics can be used for finer details.
Please ensure all lids are clean, dry, and free from any product residue before donating.
This helps us keep the project hygienic and makes them easier to work with when creating the murals.

News from the Classes
Reception
Class Reception have had a wonderful start back to school. They have begun their new topic 'Tell Me a Story' starting with the traditional tale The Little Red Hen. The children have enjoyed listening to the story and have started to learn how to retell it using a story map, actions and words. In maths, the children are focusing on deepening their understanding of their numbers to 5. They have been practising subitising (the ability to instantly recognize the quantity of a small group of objects without counting them one by one), by looking at groups of objects and knowing how many there are without counting, as well as talking about what they notice.
Class One
This week, Class 1 have begun learning their new Talk for Writing story, ‘Whatever Next’ by Jill Murphy, and they have shown great enthusiasm for their new story. They have been sequencing the events of the story, carefully thinking about what happens at the beginning, middle and end, and using pictures and actions to support their understanding.
As part of their learning, the children have also been discovering the compound words found in the story. They enjoyed identifying these words, talking about how they are made from two smaller words, and thinking about what they mean in the context of the story. They have enjoyed acting out the story in their Space Station role play, wearing their special Space helmets and blasting off to the moon.
Class Two
In Class 2 this week, we have started our new topic of shape, looking at the differences between 2D and 3D shapes, naming them and their properties. In English, our new book of George and the Dragon has got us feeling all excited to write our story openers, ensuring we are using suspense and exciting vocabulary. We have been introduced to our new topic of mining, in preparation for our trip in February.
Class Three
Despite the strange start to the week, it was lovely to have Class 3 back in the classroom. The children have jumped into their Spring term learning starting with poetry in English. They have learnt and recited a poem about the Romans, by Judith Nicolls, impressing all of the staff with how quickly they could remember it before identifying the features of a haiku in preparation for writing their own. Class 3 started their history learning on the Romans by identifying the countries of Europe, focusing closely on Italy and its capital city of Rome, before shading on their map the countries in the Roman empire. In music, Class 3 have started their recorder unit focusing on playing the note C.
Class Four
This week, Class 4, have made a positive return to school after the Christmas break and have quickly settled back into their learning. In Science, they have begun a new topic on electricity, learning about the difference between mains and battery-operated appliances and using this knowledge to sort and categorise them. The children are already excited about exploring simple circuits in the coming weeks.
Class Five
What can I say! It has been a lovely first week at St Anne’s for me, as their new teacher. All of the children have been so kind, helpful and welcoming. In English, we have been enjoying our new class text, ‘Secrets of a Sun King’, which links to our Egypt topic for this term. We have also been reviewing features of diary writing, in preparation for writing our own diaries based on our class text. We have been working hard in math’s to consolidate our understanding of multiplying a 4-digit number by a 1-digit number, and have moved onto the tricky concept of multiplying a 2-digit number by a 2-digit number.
Our history learning has focused on the importance of the River Nile for Ancient Egyptians and the many ways in which it helped them. We enjoyed using the iCrumble kits with Mrs Adams and are excited that she will be teaching in Class 5 every Thursday. We had a great time in our PE lesson learning skills for dodgeball.
Class Six
A swift start to new learning in Class 6 this week. The children have started a new topic of Ancient Maya, a new unit in science – Evolution and Inheritance and in Maths they have started Ratio. This is a full-on term with lots of new learning and revision practice. It is great to see the children being creative in their work and putting in the effort to do the best that they can. Their creative writing particularly this week has been showcased as they are building up to write a narrative poem.
Congratulations to our Stars of the Week this week
