Autumn 1: Friday 10 October 2025

Dear Parents & Carers,

It was a pleasure to catch up with so many of you at Parents’ Evening this week.  Thank you for taking the time to discuss your child’s progress and achievements so far.  If you weren’t able to attend, please contact your child’s class teacher — this is an important opportunity to learn more about how your child is getting on and to discuss ways to support them throughout the year.

World Mental Health Day

Today is World Mental Health Day — a day to recognise how important positive mental health and wellbeing are for us all.  At school, we are proud to offer support through our school counsellor, our ELSA specialist, and a progressive PSHE curriculum that encourages children to talk about their emotions and develop a strong sense of self. Each class also has a ‘worry box’, so that emotions can be shared.
In class this week, staff are reminding pupils of the many positive things they can do to maintain a healthy mindset — from sharing worries to practising gratitude and taking time for fresh air and exercise.

Staffing Update

We are delighted to welcome Miss Bartholomew and Miss Archer to our Midday Team. We are sure they will quickly become familiar faces around school and help to make lunchtimes happy and well-organised for all.

Sporting News

Congratulations to our school football team, who represented us superbly in their away match against North Wheatley — and came away with a fantastic 9–1 victory! The players showed great teamwork, sportsmanship, and determination. Well done to all involved.

Coughs, Colds and Hygiene

As we move into the colder months, we are starting to see the usual seasonal coughs and colds.  Please ensure your child brings a handkerchief or tissues to school and knows to “catch it, bin it, kill it”. Good handwashing routines help us all stay healthy through autumn and winter.

Year 6 Residential

Our Year 6 pupils are looking forward to their residential visit to Caythorpe next week. This is always a memorable experience that builds confidence, teamwork, and independence — we can’t wait to hear all about their adventures when they return!

Educational Focus for Autumn

As the autumn term progresses, our focus across the school is on building strong learning habits:

  • Reading at home – please try to read with your child at least four times a week.
  • Regular reading makes a huge difference to progress across all subjects.
  • Times Tables and Number Bonds – practising little and often at home really supports fluency and confidence in maths.
  • Autumn Learning Themes – classes are exploring seasonal topics in science, geography, and art — from changing weather patterns to harvest celebrations and environmental awareness.
  • Attendance Matters – we are aiming for every child to achieve at least 96% attendance this term. Every day in school counts!

Science workshop

On Wednesday afternoon Classes 3 and 4 enjoyed a chemistry workshop with Dr Bob from Worksop College.

They got to see lots of different chemical reactions. The ooooo’s and ahhhhh’s showed how amazed and interested they were.

A big thank you to Dr Bob for this experience.

Class 5 Residential

Arbor App

Keep a check on your Arbor App messages – these should float up as a push notification at the top of your phone.

📲 This week, we’re updating permissions and consents for all our students, and we’d like to remind you to check these on your Arbor App.

Without your permission, we’re unable to include children in some wonderful moments, such as the nativity, sporting events, or simply celebrating daily school life together. Whilst we understand when parents might choose not to give permission and will always work to that, it is crucial that, if we can, we have your consent to allow us to share these joyful experiences.

Snacks and School Dinners

Please remember to order school snacks and dinners through Arbor.  Ensure that you go to your ‘basket’ and ‘check out’ any items to confirm that they are booked.  Having money in your meals account as credit, does not mean that a meal or snack has been booked.

FOSAS News

The FOSAS AGM will be on Tuesday 10th November at 7.30pm at the Shireoaks Inn.
The positions available will be Chair, Vice Chair, Secretary and Treasurer – if you are interested in standing please let us know. It is a requirement that the positions are advertised on an annual basis. Of course, existing post holders can be nominated to stand again.

News from the Classes

Class Reception

This week, the children have been learning all about feelings and emotions, using the story ‘Owl Babies’ and ‘Emotion Fair’. They explored a wide range of emotions and have learnt that it is perfectly okay to feel lots of different things. The children thought about how our faces and body language can show how we’re feeling and how we can use those clues to understand how others might be feeling too. In maths, the children have been learning about repeating patterns. They practised identifying what comes next in a sequence and created their own patterns using a variety of colours, shapes, and objects. It was wonderful to see their confidence grow as they spotted and extended patterns during play.

Class One

This week, Class 1 have made some fantastic progress in their Music learning! They have been developing their rhythm and coordination by chanting whilst clapping to a steady beat. The children also learned two new songs — “Boom Chicka Boom” and “If I Were a Car” — both of which encouraged them to keep the beat and perform with energy and enthusiasm.

Building on this, the class explored ostinatos, which are short, repeated rhythmic patterns, and had great fun creating and performing their own.  They worked together beautifully, layering their chanting of food-themed words to create lively and creative group performances. It was wonderful to see such teamwork, focus, and musical enjoyment from everyone!

Class Two

Class 2 have been busy this week learning about fact families and related facts in maths! They were able to spot patterns and fill in missing numbers. In writing, children have continued learning all about Florence Nightingale and gathering facts for their biographies. In history, they have investigated what Victorian homes looked like, spent time discovering the different rooms and what they looked like and comparing them to modern day houses. In computing the focus has been on bar codes, where to find them and how they look on different products. The children looked at barcodes, identified a product and a price and made a shopping list with their knowledge. Their handwriting sessions have seen Class 2 look into pre cursive and focusing on curly caterpillar letters. Another hard-working week for Class 2!

Class Three

In English, Class 3 have moved onto their next genre for writing: newspaper reports. They were shocked to find ‘Stone Age’ artefacts around their classroom and are now reporting upon these events. In maths, Class 3 have started their addition and subtraction unit focusing this week on adding and subtracting tens and ones. In history, Class 3 learnt all about Stonehenge. They used evidence to decide why Stonehenge was built and what it would have been used for. They then created a poster of information for potential visitors to Stonehenge. In whole class reading, Class 3 have continued with their class book ‘Terrible True Tales: The Stone Age’ and have been working on their prediction and retrieval skills using clues and information from the text to predict what could happen next and to answer questions about what they have read.

Class Four

This week, Class 4 have continued with their weekly swimming lessons.  All the children have shown great progress since they began lessons in school during their time in Class 3.  Confidence is growing quickly, and all the children are now confident enough to swim lengths!  The staff at the swimming pool have said that the children are a wonderful group and their favourite to teach!

Class Five

Class 5 have begun finding out about Katherine Johnson in conjunction with Black History Month and their space topic.  Geography has really sparked the children’s interest as they have been researching the different types of jobs available in an urban and rural setting.  They will be using the information they gained whilst in Hathersage and comparing it with Worksop which will help them to decide where they would rather live – and why.

Class Six

Class 6 this week have been completing their second independent write, a narrative based on ‘Letters from the Lighthouse’. The children had to choose an alternative perspective and create their own version using all the skills and language features they have been learning this half-term. This week, the children have been consolidating their topic work to answer big questions based on evacuation, key WW2 events and how daily life changed. It has been great to see the children’s enthusiasm for the topic shine and the learning log projects that have come in so far, are amazing.

We are preparing ourselves for an amazing residential trip next week to PGL at Caythorpe. Lots of rest needed this weekend ready for Monday

Congratulations to our Stars of the Week this week
