Week 31 - Summer Term - 23 May 2025
Friday 23rd May 2025
Dear Parents & Carers,
As we approach the end of what has been a busy and exciting half term, there is still much to look forward to and celebrate. This week, it has been lovely to see parents in school with a huge turnout for the Year 2 D/T afternoon, the musical performance of our drummers and for Reception’s Class assembly.
Celebrating Success
A huge congratulations to our swimming team who participated in last week’s County Finals. Every child was a fantastic representative of the school and gave their absolute all in every race. They showed great sportsmanship towards the other competitors, clapping and cheering everybody on. They did us proud, achieving a well-earned 6th place out of 12 teams. We couldn’t mean be more proud of them – well done!
A Sad Moment in Our Local History
We were deeply saddened to hear about the recent fire at the old site of St Anne’s Junior School. This is particularly poignant as our pupils will soon be exploring the chronology and history of our school. While unfortunate, events like this offer a chance for children to reflect on the past and understand how places and communities evolve.
Recycling Initiative – Toys for Playtime
We are keen to encourage recycling and reusing where we can. If you have any old toys that your children no longer use – such as building bricks, toy cars, dolls, or Happyland toys – we would be very grateful for donations. These items can bring fresh enjoyment to our pupils during playtime. Thank you in advance for your generosity.
Leave of Absence & Attendance
Thank you to those parents who have completed leave of absence forms – your cooperation greatly supports our safeguarding systems. While the government strongly discourages holidays during term time and we are required to follow local authority procedures (including template letters), we do appreciate your honesty and openness.
We believe education is most successful when schools and parents work in partnership. Part of this is modelling integrity and respect, helping our children to grow into responsible individuals who understand the value of telling the truth and making the right choices.
Statutory Assessments
As we move into June, please be aware that children in Year 1, and Year 4 will be taking part in statutory assessments at various points throughout the month. We will ensure the experience is as positive and stress-free as possible for the children.
Wellbeing Focus
Keeping active during the holidays is important not just for physical health but also for mental wellbeing. There are many great local opportunities available – do look at what’s out there.
News from the Classes
Class Reception
This week Class Reception have been learning all about pets. They have been thinking carefully about how to look after different animals to help be happy and healthy. They learnt the song ‘How much is that Doggie in the Window’. They had a special visit from Mrs Owen, who brought in Bow the Highland Pony to meet Class Reception and Class 1. Everyone was proud of Class Reception when they performed their first Class Assembly.
Class One
This week, Class 1 have been writing riddles about animals. They have researched different animals, considering what they look like, where they live, their diet and have put these into clues for their riddle.
Here are a couple of the riddles, can you guess the animal?
I lay small eggs.
I am a cute carnivore.
I swim in the bright blue sea and I am green.
I have a hard shell.
What am I?

I am grey and I am a carnivore.
I swim.
I have sharp teeth.
I am smooth.
I am a scary fish.
What am I?

Class Two
On Thursday afternoon, Class 2 invited parents in to help complete their ‘Design and Technology’ project. It was a super afternoon with all children trying hard to make their moving vehicle based upon their design. A big thank you to the many parents and grandparents who were able to get involved!
Class Three
Class 3 have been busy this week consolidating their learning on time in maths. The children have been telling the time on analogue and digital clocks (further practice at home would be great), then using this knowledge to work out durations using start and end times. In English, the children have been exploring limericks. They were able to identify the different features of a limerick including rhyming words to then use for their independent writing. The children are growing their vocabulary constantly to improve their writing.
In Science, the children have been testing contact and non-contact forces using magnets. The children have embraced their scientist curiosity by testing force strength on various objects in and out the classroom. Finally, in PE the children have consolidated their learning of tennis by competing with Class 4 in an inter-house competition.
Class Four
This week’s focus for writing has been on biographies. Class 4 were tasked with writing a biography about King Henry VIII; they needed to include all their Class 4 grammatical features and ensure they were including key facts. They then researched a second monarch from Tudor times to write their own, independent biography. In science, the children have created their own food webs based on animals in different habitats. In history, they have been thinking about different levels of Tudor society. They compared the food, housing and clothing of rich and poor Tudors. Class 4 have been hard at work learning their timestables. It is imperative they keep up this momentum over half term.
Class Five
Class 5 has continued learning about fractions this week, including multiplying mixed numbers with whole numbers. They can be incredibly proud of the way that their understanding has developed this year. In English, they have written their own versions of Ancient Greek myths; do read them if you get a chance- and if you dare; with phrases such as ‘machete-sharp teeth ready to attack,’ they are not for the faint-hearted!
In PE, the pupils have continued to develop forehand and backhand tennis shots as well as quick return of the ball in rounders.
Using pictures to support drawing the human body in various poses, the class were able to draw in proportion effectively. They will be able to use this knowledge in support of sculpture after half term.
Class Six
Class 6 have been writing a balanced argument based on the novel 'Holes.' They have worked hard in teams and partners, to improve their pieces of writing and they were excellent at conducting our class debate in the build-up to writing.
Children have been buzzing with excitement this week, as auditions have taken place for our end of year production.
Children have also made 'blood' in the pursuit of science, to help them understand what is in our blood and what each component does.
In art children have started to explore Leonardo Da Vinci and are building up to creating their own heart images.

Prayers from Harry & Holly (6)
Dear God, Help us to support each other and to build hope through what we are giving to others. Amen
Dear God, Those who follow Jesus are wise; help us to support one another and build a firm foundation like the wise man who built a house on the rock. Amen
