“Developing the whole child, spiritually, mentally and physically in a caring Christian environment through close links to the Church and Community”
Friday 16th May 2025
Dear Parents and Carers,
As we come to the end of another busy week, I would like to take a moment to acknowledge how sensibly and maturely our Year 6 pupils have approached their SATs. These assessments are just one small part of a much bigger picture, and we continue to be proud of each individual for who they are and all they contribute to our school community.
Our centenary celebrations are drawing ever closer, and discussions are in full swing. Keep an eye out for flyers coming home soon - we hope you’ll join us in making this a truly memorable event for everyone. We would welcome offers of help for the fayre on Saturday 28 June and raffle/ tombola prizes. The day will also be an opportunity for ex-pupils to have a wander around the school and see how it has changed over time, and look at an array of old photographs. Please spread the word!
Next week, we’re excited to see our talented swimmers represent the school at the Nottinghamshire Swimming Gala Final. We wish them all the very best of luck and know they will do us proud.
A quick reminder that our updated ‘Leave of Absence’ form is now available in the foyer. Please ensure this is completed ahead of any planned absences. In line with our safeguarding responsibilities, we will carry out welfare checks depending on the length and nature of a child’s absence. If your family is taking a holiday, do let us know—this helps us ensure every child’s wellbeing is supported.
Travel tracker
Over the past couple of months, we have started a new scheme to encourage and track active travel to school. Your child may have already come home with a badge showing that they have been successful in actively travelling to school. The government recommendation is to aim for 60 active minutes. It is a guideline for children and young people to promote physical activity and overall health. This means they should engage in moderate to vigorous intensity physical activity for at least 60 minutes daily. At St Anne’s, we try to promote this in a number of ways. We recognise that for some families, walking or cycling the entire journey to school is not a possibility, however, travel tracker offers a park and stride option for those who drive to park at least 10 minutes from school and to walk the rest of the journey. Please see the additional information about each option and discuss the ways you can travel actively with your child.
News from the Classes
Class Reception
This week Class Reception have been thinking about how to keep themselves healthy. They have been learning about instructions and giving and following them to wash their hands. They also enjoyed their final ‘Forest School’ session. The children were able to get into the river and use the nets to dip, collect and identify lots of water minibeasts.
Class One
In Art, Class 1 have been taking a closer look at the work of Vincent Van Gogh. They studied his brush strokes, and the way he uses impasto to create a raised area on the canvas. They talked about the colours he used and how different colours complement each other. The children then made 'Visual Notes' in their sketchbooks, painting using the style of Van Gogh and taking their favourite parts of his work to use in their final ‘Expressive Art’ piece next week.
Class Two
Class 2's focus author for this half term is Rachel Bright. They have enjoyed reading several of her books this week, including 'The Koala Who Could', The Squirrels Who Squabbled' and 'The Lion Inside'. The children are preparing to complete an independent write and have been using some of the author's wonderful words and exciting phrases to help them plan for their own narratives.
Class Three
Class 3 have been busy journalists this week, publishing their newspaper reports on laptops. The children had to develop the skill of creating a word document using text and image to create an exciting newspaper report for the book ‘Escape to Pompeii’. In Maths, the children have been focussing on time. This can be a tricky concept to grasp, especially reading analogue. It needs a lot of practice, understanding the different times a clock can show and what this looks like. Any further practice at home would be amazing!
In science this week, the children were exploring magnets. They allowed their curiosity to come out and see what would happen. Many of the children were setting up mini experiments to see what a magnet was capable of and if the look of the magnet made a difference. Finally, in topic the children were researching volcanoes! They used knowledge of how a volcano was formed to create a diagram. They then used library books and iPads to do their own research finding facts to share.
Class Four
In science this week, Class 4 were creating their own food chains for different habitats, labelling which living things were the producers, consumers, predators and prey and showing where the energy was passed to. In history, Class 4 have been developing their understanding of chronology by creating a timeline for the important events across Tudor history. In French, the children have learnt the names of 12 pieces of classroom equipment and have started to use the phrases ‘dans mon sac a dos j’ai’ and ‘dans ma trousse j’ai’ to explain what they have in their pencil case and backpack. In English, they have started writing their biography about Henry VIII ensuring they have included complex sentences, fronted adverbials, possessive apostrophes and expanded noun phrases.
Class Five
Class 5 has returned to fractions in Maths this week; it was clear that lots of the learning from the previous term had been remembered as the children turned their attention to multiplying fractions. It was a pleasure to see how their reasoning skills are developing as they apply their knowledge to this new skill. In Whole class reading, the pupils were able to infer how a character is feeling, highlighting which vocabulary choices the author has used to suggest this. This focus on vocabulary has also supported writing dialogue to portray characters. After role-playing a scene, they chose precise verbs and adverbs to describe a scene; dialogue which will be used, together with the character descriptions the Minotaur from last week, in the re-telling of a myth. The PE focus for this term is on tennis and rounders. The pupils have practised volleys with forehand and backhand as well as how to be an effective backstop. The class has also used the opportunity of Christian Aid Week and the charity motto of ‘We believe in life before death’, to think about the positive impact that we can have on the lives of others.
Class Six
The Class 6 children sat through six gruelling tests this week, with smiles on their faces and filled with confidence. Each child this week has shone so bright and overcome so much. Between tests, children revised and showed commitment to their learning. Along the way, they have had some fun too, many sweets, lots of games and a lovely class game of scatter ball was played. Audition scripts have also been sent home, in preparation for next week's auditions.

A Prayer for Christian Aid Week
Lord, you are faithful to your promises.
Through the Spirit, you bless us with abounding hope. When power seeks to silence justice,
give us the courage to raise our voice.
When an end to poverty seems far off,
renew our faith in your kingdom come on earth.
When our neighbour reaches out,
inspire us to respond with overflowing love.
In Jesus’ name,
Amen.
Finally, the school received a certificate of thanks from the NSPCC Number Day back in February where £214 was raised. Thank you.
Wishing you all a sunny weekend,
With my very best wishes,
Mrs Middleton & the St Anne’s Team
