Dear Parents and Carers,

This week we were delighted to welcome Jo White, MP for Bassetlaw, to our school. As part of her commitment to understanding the complexities of modern education, Jo is visiting all schools across the area. It was a great opportunity to showcase our school community and share the fantastic work happening here.

With the warmer weather arriving, a reminder to ensure that children come to school prepared for the sunshine. Please send your child with a hat, apply sun cream before school, and ensure they bring a water bottle each day. We want everyone to stay safe and comfortable during these sunny spells!

Exciting news as we continue preparations for our Centenary Celebrations! On Friday 27th June, we will be holding a special service followed by a family picnic on the school field - where we will also bury our time capsule. Then on Saturday 28th June, we invite the wider community to an Open Event and Summer Fayre. To make this a success, we are in urgent need of volunteers to help run stalls and games. If you can spare a little time to support us, please do get in touch—we’d love to have you involved!
 

80^th Anniversary VE Day

Each class will be marking this day within their classes with a variety of planned activities.  Mrs Dunnicliff will be cooking a special VE Day Celebratory menu on Thursday – please book on the Arbor system. We invite the children to come into school wearing read, blue or white clothes as part of the celebrations on Thursday 8^th May.       

News from the Classes

Class Reception 

This week, Class Reception have continued to enjoy the story ‘We're Going on a Bear Hunt’.  They have thought about the structure and have invented their own story, ‘We're Going on Dinosaur Hunt’.  They have been thinking about the different settings they might go through and the different ways they might describe them.  One of their activities this week was to decide what equipment they would take on a dinosaur hunt and give some reasons for their choices.

Class One 

Class 1 have started their Godly Play sessions with Claire Bishop, and they are loving it. Each week, Claire shares a Bible story about Jesus with them, and they reflect on this in class through art, craft, writing, role play or craft. The children are thoughtful in their reflections, considering how each story links to our school values, and explaining the importance of these stories. This week, Claire shared 'The Parable of the Lost Sheep' with them. The children developed a great understanding of responsibility as they spent the day looking after their own sheep, making sure they didn't lose it or stopping the wolf from capturing it.

Class Two 

This week in Design and Technology, Class 2 has been investigating fixed and loose axles after a discussion about how vehicles move.  They have begun to construct their vehicles, each making a choice about how they wanted their axles to be attached to the chassis.  

Class Three 

Class 3 have continued to explore the book ‘Escape from Pompeii’. This week, the children took on the role of a newspaper reporter. In groups, the children had different roles to act out from reporter, researcher, and interviewee. The groups did some amazing acting, and we cannot wait to see how this will show in the writing over the next few weeks. In maths, the children have finished the last unit on fractions, practising the times table and division facts has been so important to fully grasp the skill of finding fractions of amounts. They have now moved on to the topic of money. This involves children being able to count different amounts, find change and answer reasoning questions around money. In topic, the children were researching and understanding how earthquakes happen and the scientific process of measuring their impact. This linked in with the new science topic of forces and magnets. To start this unit, the children had to define the word force and then classify different actions based on whether they are a push or pull force.

Class Four 

In Class 4 this week the children have been working hard in English to construct a sonnet based on the works of William Shakespeare. They had to ensure that their sonnet had 14 lines, that each line had 10 syllables and that the word at the end of each line rhymed. The class were up for the challenge and created some fantastic sonnets linked to their learning on Henry VIII and his wives. In science, they have started their new unit of learning ‘living things and their habitats’. They started their learning by defining the key vocabulary that they will be using to construct their food chains and classification keys. In PE, Class 4 wowed with their tennis skills in which many of the children were able to create successful rallies with their partner.

After that Henry sadly took her life,

Even though some of Henry’s wives died,

Catherine Parr somehow managed and survived,

They were divorced, beheaded and one died,

Class Five 

Class 5 produced some excellent discussion this week, justifying their ideas. Having dissected a range of flowers, they were able to not only identify the different parts and their function but also explain how they are adapted to ensure successful pollination. This was then compared to the tactics used for wind pollination.

In Computing, Class 5 were able to use databases to sort successfully, including more than one field. They were able to compare using online databases with what life must have been like with only paper records.

The pupils have also delved more deeply into their understanding of Ancient Greece by investigating a series of myths. Having studied the way that Medusa the gorgon was able to turn all to stone who look at her with her ‘loathsome acidic eyes’, the children were able to apply some of the devices used to describe the character to their depiction of the Minotaur; the half-man, half-bull beast which ‘lurked in the depths of the labyrinth’. Come along to Class 5 to read all about it…. if you dare!

Class Six 

During this week, Class Six have been on several hunts around school to find SATs style questions and work out the answers before returning to the 'shop' for a treat.  In science children made playdough, to sculpt their 3D hearts and learn the parts, and their functions. During RE year 6 have been thinking what qualities an 'almighty being' would need to have and explain why they think that quality is important.  The children are continuing to enjoy ‘Holes' and finding out more about Stanley's life.  During their maths sessions this week, they practised reflecting and translating shapes.

Well done to Hansel, Alfie, Jack F, Julien, Alex, Noah, George S, jack S, felicity, Charlotte, Amelia, Lilly, Florence, Betsy and Eva Ann for taking part in the KS1 Multi -Sports Festival hosted by Sparken Hill. Well done to the ‘Sports Leaders’ who accompanied them – Ethan, Ollie, Jensen and Ava.

Out of School Achievements

Well done to Oliver and Georgiano in Class 5 who play for Worksop Town Under 10’s – they have played well all season and won their league.

Dana (3) – Star of the week from her gymnastic club.

Jude (3) – Sharing his snooker medal for taking part at an event at ‘The Crucible’ in Sheffield.

Jasper (2) – Sharing his first place trophy for motorcross.

A number of the children took part in their local swimming club gala with Dolphins achieving some great results!

Emily (4) – 4^th in 50m butterfly (PB), 3^rd in 50m backstroke, 4^th in 50m breaststroke (PB), 2^nd in 50m freestyle (PB)

Georgiana (4) – 2^nd in 50m butterfly (PB), 3^rd in 50m backstroke, 3^rd in 50m breaststroke (PB), 5^th in 50m freestyle.

Harri (4) - gaining 4^th place in all strokes and PB’s in all.

Dana (3) – gaining 1^st in butterfly and 2^nd in the others with PB’s in all.

Eliza (3) – 5th in 50m butterfly, 3^rd in 50m backstroke, 2nd in 50m breaststroke, 6^th in 50m freestyle.
