Week 34 - Summer Term - 20 June 2025

Friday 20th June 2025

Dear Parents and Carers,

What a warm week it’s been! Whilst we’ve certainly enjoyed the sunshine, we’ve also had to make a few adjustments to keep both children and staff as cool and comfortable as possible. We’re fortunate that Key Stage 1 has air conditioning, though this isn’t the case for Key Stage 2. We’ll continue to monitor the weather closely next week.

As you’ll know, Sports Day is planned for Tuesday, and we are currently reviewing the forecast. If necessary, we may shorten the event or adjust some activities to ensure the safety and wellbeing of all involved.

Please help us by ensuring your child:

• Comes to school wearing sun cream

• Brings a water bottle

• Has a sun hat or cap for outdoor activities

This week, we were delighted to welcome our new starters, who are beginning their journey with us! We also enjoyed visits from Medical Mavericks, who delivered exciting STEM-based sessions across the school, and from local road safety teams, who spoke with Years 5 and 6 about staying safe as they become more independent.

As we look ahead, please see the attached flyer with an overview of next week’s events as we begin our centenary celebrations—a special moment in our school’s history.

Medical Mavericks

This week children in Classes 1-6 participated in the ‘Medical Mavericks’ workshop. This workshop was designed to provide children with knowledge of different medical careers and to increase the aspirations of children. During their time in the workshop, children had the opportunity to draw blood from a mannequin, take ultrasound, use a keyhole surgery machine to name just a few. It was fantastic to see the enthusiasm and wonder of all children and some adults too.

Sporting news

A big well done to the nine Class 4 children who battled the heat on Tuesday at the ‘Quad kids festival’. They took part in running, jumping and throwing events and really gave it their all.

Reception

This week, Reception have been learning all about the life cycle of a frog and exploring the important role that bees play in our environment. The children thoroughly enjoyed going on a mini beast hunt around the school, where they discovered ants, spiders, ladybirds, and worms. There was great excitement when they noticed that all five of our caterpillars have now formed chrysalises – everyone is eagerly waiting to see them hatch! The class have also been having lots of fun practising for Sports Day, trying out a variety of games and races with enthusiasm.

Class 1

This week in DT, Class 1 examined, tasted and described a variety of different fruits. They tried kiwi, pineapple, blueberries, honeydew melon and mango. There were many differing opinions, but overall blueberries were the favourite. They looked closely at the fruit, and talked about how it felt, after tasting it, they described the fruit, using words such as 'fleshy', 'sticky', 'sweet' and 'bitter'.

Class 2

This week Class 2 have thoroughly enjoyed exploring Aboriginal art.  They have looked at the techniques of hatching and cross hatching and used dot painting to create a turtle in this style.  Finally, they looked closely at many examples of Aboriginal art to understand the colours needed for their final pieces.  They noted that the colours were all natural and earthy.

Class 3

Class 3 have had a full-on week! On Monday it was a busy day with swimming, then a ‘Medical Maverick’ workshop. This saw the children explore different medical equipment such as a blood pressure and ultrasound machine.  It was great to see the children be curious and explore. Some were able to link it to experiences they have had with a doctor or hospital.

In English, the children have been planning and writing their independent narratives for an alternative version of Escape from Pompeii. The children have developed their vocabulary to use and focussed on the Class 3 writing targets. This includes speech, adverbs, conjunctions and paragraphs. For Maths, the children finished their shape work by learning about 3D shapes. Key words were introduced such as Edges, Vertices and Faces. The children then had a creative task of working in pairs, using only matchsticks and playdough to create 3D shapes using the key words to describe. Their creations were amazing!

Class 4

It has been a busy week in Class 4 with week beginning with the medical maverick’s workshop on Monday. It was fantastic to see all the children throw themselves in to each activity. In English, Class 4 are beginning their persuasive letter genre. They have been working on varying their sentences to make a greater impact on their audience. They are looking forward to writing their persuasive letter to Henry VIII. In French, Class 4 have been learning how to order different foods and drinks from a restaurant.

Class 5

This week Class 5 has continued preparation for the St. Anne’s centenary by looking at some documents from the Nottingham archives. Did you know that they recommended a male assistant head, especially if the headteacher was female? Or that the toilets for the school on the old site were at the bottom of the playground? The children then wrote diaries as if they had arrived in school one morning to discover that everything was as it had been in the past. In Maths, they continued working with decimals, subtracting with exchange. As part of the Computing curriculum, they used PowerPoint to create images where one element builds on top of another.

The class also took part in 2 exciting workshops this week. In Medical Mavericks, they were introduced by medical students to different careers within the NHS- and had the opportunity to take blood pressure, experience the sight of the visually impaired and give injections (to a dummy and under close medical supervision!) Visitors providing the road safety workshop discussed important safety measures, such as the wearing of seatbelts, as part of our safeguarding provision.

Class 6

Class 6 have enjoyed the sunshine this week, they have continued to practise their athletic skills (focused on shot put this week) and enjoyed being sprinkled with water to help them to cool down afterwards!  During English children have finished their stories based on the journey of a red blood cell and started to publish them. Class 6 have also got stuck into writing and producing their end of leavers service as well as continuing with their show practice. They have listened to more interviews this week and learnt more about St Anne's history, enabling them to produce work for the celebration display for the centenary.
