Week 29 - Summer Term - 09 May 2025

“Developing the whole child, spiritually, mentally and physically in a caring Christian                                             environment through close links to the Church and Community”

                                                    Friday 9th May 2025

Dear Parents and Carers,

It has been a short but busy week following the Bank Holiday.  We have marked the 80th anniversary of VE Day with a special assembly and class-based activities, reflecting on the sacrifices made by veterans and recognising the importance of peace and remembrance.

Our football team played a match on Tuesday - while they were narrowly defeated, they demonstrated great teamwork and determination. Well done to all involved!

Next week, our Class 6 pupils will be sitting their SATs.  All we ask is that they try their best.  These tests are just one way to show what has been learned, but we remind our pupils that the results do not define them. Every child is unique, and their value goes far beyond a test score.
We are continuing to refine our systems through Arbor to ensure it aligns smoothly with all other school processes. If you notice any anomalies or inconsistencies, please don’t hesitate to let us know.

Centenary Celebrations

We will be hosting our ‘Summer Fayre’ on Saturday 28th June.  As it is our centenary year, we really want to create a memorable event.  If you, or the company you work for are willing to donate a raffle prize we would be grateful.  If you can help run a stall or know someone ‘external’ who may want to pay the fee to have their stall, then please let us know.  All funds raised go to directly supporting the children in school.

News from the Classes

Class Reception

This week Class Reception have been busy learning about dinosaurs.  They have been finding out that some dinosaurs are herbivores, carnivores and omnivores and know that they are now extinct.  On Thursday they enjoyed a VE day and made bunting, spitfires and peace doves.  In PE they have been playing lots of team games and learning to find a space and take turns. A Reception Class reminder that next Friday is our final forest school session.  They will be river dipping and so children will need to wear wellies.

Class One

Class 1 celebrated VE Day on Thursday. They arrived at school wearing red, white and blue, and listened to music from the 1940’s.  The children made commemorative medals, which included words such as 'We'll Meet Again' and pictures of poppies and the Union Jack.  They fingerpainted a silhouette of a soldier, using red, white and blue.  Finally, they used split pins and a dove template, to create ‘Victory Doves’ with messages of peace, love and hope.

Class Two

This week Class 2 have begun learning about Australian Art.  They began by studying the contemporary Australian artist ‘Pete Cromer’.  The children were inspired by his bright, colourful collages and created some group collages of their own during the week. Here is Pete Cromer's website should you wish to explore his art with your children at home. https://www.petecromer.com/

Class Three

This has been a busy week for Class 3; the children have been completing their newspaper report on the eruption of Pompeii.  They have been brilliant in building a bank of amazing vocabulary to use within their writing and they will be publishing their reports on laptops in the coming week.  In Maths, they have been developing the skill of finding change from different amounts of money.  This has seen them use their prior learning of ‘addition and subtraction’ to show their working out.

For science this week, the children completed an experiment to test the different surfaces for friction. In groups, the children had to set up, complete and report on their findings.  It was great to see the collaboration and their scientific thinking in action.  Finally, the children celebrated VE day on Thursday by learning about rationing and farming.  The children added a design to a plant pot and set up some seeds that would have been grown in that time.  Their other task was to create a paper plate dove with words of commemoration.

Class Four

Despite the short week with the bank holiday, Class 4 have been busy with their learning.  In RE, the children have been looking at symbols relating to Pentecost, explaining the meaning of each symbol.  On Wednesday, Class 4 were very helpful during the interview process and showcased their fantastic behaviour and attitude to learning to the candidates.  In whole class reading, Class 4 have been enjoying their text ‘Tudor Boy Spy’ and have been retrieving information from the text to answer questions. On Thursday, Class 4 celebrated VE day by writing ‘thank you letters’ to veterans and by making doves of peace.

Class Five

Class 5 worked collaboratively this week when investigating which design of spinner would help a plant disperse its seeds most effectively.  They were able to talk about how to make it a comparative test, as well as suggesting how to make results more reliable, such as dropping from the end of a ruler to ensure the same height each time.  In art, they used basic shapes to sketch the human form in different positions, taking care to look at the proportion of the limbs.

For VE Day, and building upon the success of Ancient Egyptian dance last term, they learnt some common dance steps from the 1940’s as well as solving a puzzle inspired by the famous Enigma machine.  They wrote messages of gratitude and thoughts about peace in response to learning what this momentous day meant to the people of Britain 80-years ago.

Class Six

Class 6 have worked hard this week in PE, they developed their bowling, fielding and batting techniques in our cricket lesson and continued to impress Emma, during gymnastics.  They worked well in their teams and started to have fun, running mini competitions with each other.

During their science work, they read about the circulatory system and gained more knowledge about how the system works.  Within their other lessons they have played SPAG games, raced through maths questions and practised more reading comprehensions.  On Thursday, children enjoyed engaging in VE day celebrations and understanding what VE day might have been like 80-years ago.  They produced some excellent newspaper reports.

The Class 6 children have worked so hard this year and are more than ready for the week ahead. They should be so proud of all they have achieved so far. They deserve a restful weekend and ensure they have a good night’s sleep and good breakfast before they start school next week.
