Dear Parents and Carers,

I hope you had a restful Easter and benefitted from the sunshine in the first week! It is hard to believe that we are in the final term of the academic year but as we look ahead it will be a term of memorable learning experiences and events – keep a close eye on the calendar of dates at the end of this newsletter, as they will be updated each week.

House Captains are keen for their ‘house family’ to earn as many team points as the winners for this year will be in receipt of a house treat – so encourage your child to do all they can to earn their team points!

This term we welcome back Miss Gingell who will be supporting in Class 1 and Class 5.  Mrs Adams will be covering teacher ‘planning, preparation and assessment’ time in Class 3 and 4.

Admissions for September

If your child has been offered a Reception place for September, please can you go online and confirm the place so that we can determine our final list ready for the ‘new parents meeting’ in June. We have children on the waiting list.

Sporting News

This week every child (and the staff) took part in a mini marathon. To celebrate the London Marathon this weekend, our children ran, jogged or walked 2 miles around our school ground.

  

80^th Anniversary VE Day

Each class will be marking this day within their classes with a variety of planned activities. Mrs Dunnicliff will be cooking a special VE Day Celebratory menu – please book on the Arbor system. 

Changes to Lunch Menu and KS2 Snacks

Over the Easter holidays, further updates were carried out to the school MIS Arbor system. The office team are in daily contact with Arbor as all systems are streamlined with attention being given to all ‘mechanisms talking to each other’. Please ensure you book your child’s lunch and snack choices. Pizza muffin for snack today was extremely popular!

Due to a funeral and polling on Thursday May 1^st, the Church carpark will be out of use for school parents in the morning. Please make alternative travelling plans.

News from the Classes

Class Reception 

This week Class Reception have launched their new topic Animal Encounters by learning their first story, ‘We're Going on a Bear Hunt’.  They have used a ‘Talk 4 writing method ‘and are learning to perform it using a story map and action. They have been learning some key facts about different bears and have been introduced to some vocabulary such as hibernate, nocturnal and endangered.

 Class One 

This week, Class 1 have been introduced to their new story in English. 'The Snail and the Whale' by Julia Donaldson. They have started learning the story through ‘Talk for Writing,’ and are enjoying the element of rhyming throughout the book. They have started using the book to make connections with their new topic 'Land Ahoy', thinking all about the seaside now and one hundred years ago.

Class Two 

This week Class 2 has begun their new Geography topic, which is all about Australia.  As ever, we would encourage any families of the class to share connections they may have with Australia and allow us to see any memorabilia.  In the coming weeks, they will learn all about the physical geography of Australia in particular how vast and varied it is.

Class Three 

What a fabulous start to the summer term in Class 3. The children have been busy scientists this week by consolidating their learning on plants to end the unit. They have been experimenting with daisies to try and get the petals to change colour through water transportation. The children had to set up the experiment and observe the results over time. In English, the children have been exploring the new book ‘Escape to Pompeii’. This story is centred around their new topic of ‘Natural Disasters’. Using this book, the children will be completing a newspaper report on a volcano eruption. For Maths, the children are developing their knowledge and skills with fractions, from addition and subtraction to finding the fraction of a whole amount

On Friday, the children took part in a Mini-Marathon event as part of a scheme linked to PE for schools around the country. This event supports the London Marathon which takes place on Sunday. 

Class Four 

It has been a busy week for Class 4 with lots of practice in preparation for their upcoming times table test and with new topics being started.  In history, Class 4 have started their learning on the Tudors by studying the Tudor family tree and learning key bits of information about each person. In English, they have started their poetry unit looking at ‘sonnets’ written by William Shakespeare. They learnt and recited the ‘Witches Spell’ from Macbeth and have been identifying and writing rhyming couplets. In maths, the children have been tackling money, converting pounds to pence and comparing and ordering amounts of money. They too also enjoyed participating in the mini marathon.

Class Five 

Class 5 have had a busy start to the summer term settling into their new topics. In English, related to the theme of Ancient Greece, they have been learning some of Aesop’s fables, using these as a stimulus writing a range of sentence types. With sentences such as, ‘High above, the luscious, tempting grapes made the fox think he was hallucinating,’ they can be very proud of what they have produced. It is thought that the enslaved Aesop was an intelligent storyteller who told stories which made fun of the people of Delphi; since these people then threw him off a cliff, we decided that not every decision he made was the best!! 

Maths has focused on statistics this week, including interpreting line graphs and timetables, whilst in PE, the pupils were introduced to Danish Longball, giving the opportunity for some excellent throwing and catching. Pupils also took part in the mini marathon, with everyone completing at least 10 laps of the field/playground circuit. Well done for demonstrating such stamina, Class 5. 

Class Six 

Welcome back Class 6, to your final summer term at St Anne's. Class 6 has returned with a fantastic attitude, ready to tackle all this term will throw at them. This week children have started to learn about the circulatory system in science, by learning the main organs in the system and how the heart and lungs work hard to turn de-oxygenated blood into oxygenated blood. 

During maths, children have been looking at shape and exploring angles in quadrilaterals and moving onto co-ordinates. 

In English, children have read the first few chapters of ‘Holes’ and are preparing to write their own first-person narratives from Stanley's point of view. 

They also enjoyed the start of the cricket unit and began to run their mini marathon.
